He discusses traveling to Chattanooga with the 37th Ohio Regiment on a train that fell off of the tracks and eight feet over a stone wall, killing one and injuring fourteen. He ends the letter stating that he will be fighting for fifteen days.

Letter from Samuel [Burn] to John B. Eshleman. Written from somewhere along the Potomac River in Maryland during the Civil War. Describes troop movements, life in camp, and interactions with enslaved persons. With photocopy.
Admin/Biographical History
John B. Eshleman was born 11 February 1839 in West Hempfield Township. He had a common school education and taught in West Hempfield and Columbia for 36 years. In 1880 he was elected to the Pennsylvania State Legislature. He served two terms as a Lancaster County Commissioner beginning in 1893. He was also a justice of the peace. He died 21 June 1906 and is buried at Ironville Methodist Church Cemetery in West Hempfield Twp.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane giving details of Miss Lane’s coming wedding and the house Dick has bought in Philadelphia, asking if she has been invited, reporting that Dr. James Lane lost nearly all of his movable property during a raid by the rebels, and that the Misses Lane and Jenkins are departing for Philadelphia today. Letter from John B. Lebkicher to brother from Camp Murfreesboro, Tennessee, regarding plans to move to the front and the falling back of the Confederate Army. He was promoted to orderly sergeant of his company. He asks his brother to write so he knows he came out of the fight safely. States that it is an honor to the people of Lancaster to have great soldiers fighting and that his regiment is one of the best in the Army of the Cumberland.

Letter from John B. Lebkicher to brother from camp, in which he describes being on the front near the Tennessee River with the enemy before them. They were low on rations and artillery because the weather had been rainy and the wagons are stuck in the mud. They had already captured many prisoners and the way they were traveling in to Tullahoma could lead to more captures. Complains of marching too much.
