Description
Draft of a letter from Thomas Welsh to General Orlando B. Willcox. From Hustonville, Kentucky. Deals with disciplinary matters in the 27th Michigan Regiment, including the Chaplain who wrote a plaintive letter to the Detroit Advertiser & Tribune that was also evidently disrespectful to his superior officers. Welsh arrested the Chaplain, but recommends against dismissing him from service. In another matter involving charges brought by the late Lt. Col. Sprague of the 27th against Col. Fox of the 27th, Welsh declines to convene a Court Martial, recommending that for procedural reasons it be handled at the Department or Division level instead.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to Edwin from camp near Fredericksburg, Virginia, describing camp life. As requested in a previous letter, he informs Edwin that he has not received boots or gloves and asks for a pair of gloves. He shares that he and his fellow soldiers believe the war will soon be over.

Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to his father, David McGran Lebkicher, from camp at Waterloo, regarding the marching from Hillsborough to Sneekers Gap, then to Bloomfield, then to Upperville, then to Piedmont Station where they skirmished with the Confederate Army, then to Orleans and to Waterloo (7 miles from Warrenton Junction). He mentions that he saw Capt. Grass of the 99th, General Burnside, and General McClellan.
