Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester asking her pardon for not writing earlier; Mrs. Plitt still at Wheatland; Uncle well and calm as he awaits the outcome of the election today; wishing Lily had written more as a political writer; Robert Eden’s former dark red moustache; Eskridge getting along well using a crutch and cane; the toll that the campaign took on the family; in the election “right will prevail”; Emily Schaumburg’s staying with the Porters; Colonel Pleasonton’s engagement to a widow with many children and Addy’s reaction; and suggests that Lily’s father might follow the same example to give Lily some children to play with. This group of sixteen letters of unknown ownership and whereabouts were copied on 19 July 1937 by F. A. Henry, American Consulate, Melbourne, Australia. Whether he owned the letters is not clear.

Letter 4. Letter from James Buchanan to James Buchanan Henry praising Miss Lane’s cooking, some financial matters, and the publication of his book. Wheatland. 29 September 1865. Letter 5. Letter from James Buchanan to James Buchanan Henry doubting the truth of Mrs. David Lynch’s contention that her daughter, Isabella, ought to be move from the convent to home because of illness, asking for money for the trip and some other financial matters. Letter from James Buchanan to James Buchanan Henry inquiring about the removal of Miss Lynch from the convent; complaining about the “pegging away” of her mother, who “might not be in her right mind”; Mr. Schell’s silence; Harriet in Cuba; and financial matters. advising her to send all correspondence about her cousin’s, Dr. Lane’s, estate to him as a precautionary manner; recalling his pleasant dining evening with the Hiesters even though she wore a “long thick cloth Frock on the hottest day of the Season”; saying that Miss Hetty suggested inviting James Henry and his wife to visit; and stating that the case of Mr. Lane’s estate has not been decided.
