This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to Major Van Ness seeking a settlement of accounts upon discharge and a request for three months of extra pay for a leave of absence. Note: Welsh refers to himself as a disabled soldier which along with MG0828 SeriesB F12, shows his concern over facing a return to civilian life with a serious leg wound.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.
Good condition, with small tears around the edge, and discoloration on the folds.

Letter 1 Letter concerns the bill of Miss Yates in the amount of 8½ cents. No date.
Letter 2 Letter making arrangements to send Miss Hobbs, Miss Dow, and the Misses Laumans for a Saturday appointment. Miss Lane will not be going, but Mr. John Ford, the driver of the carriage, is a careful driver. Wheatland, 26 September 1849.
Letter 3 Letter regretting not attending a musical presentation because of bad weather. Wheatland, 6 March 1850. Letter 4 Letter offering to send a carriage for Miss Theodora, the Misses Laumans, and his niece if they have permission to visit him. Wheatland, 13 August 1850. Letter 5 Letter announcing that Harriet Parker, sister of Miss Hetty, will accompany a pupil for the school. Wheatland, 18 November 1851.
Letter 6 Letter regretting that he cannot attend a function at the school tomorrow because of bad weather and because he has already accepted an invitation to attend the opening of the plank road between Lancaster and Petersburg. Wheatland, 7 December 1851.
