Color lithograph of Empress Eugenie. The lithograph was created from an original painting by F. Winterhalter. The Empress is standing on a platform, her body facing left, head turned front, her right hand raised over a jewelled crown that sits atop of a gold trimmed brown pillow on a red and gold trimmed table; a gold embroidered arm chair is behind her. The Empress is wearing a a long pearl necklace over her white double flounced evening gown trimmed in lace and enhanced by a green bustle as well as a blue and white sash. She wears a jeweled bracelet on both arms, a pearl tiara with a small pearl crown atop her chignon veil.
One of two teacups. Inside of cup is lined with gold. Gilt decor forms a wide band on the exterior around the rim that and connects to and covers the handle and a vertical gilt band that connects to the flared foot. The body of the bowl is white with a flower and landscape hand-painted scene.

In 1995 the JBF staff assigned the Object ID W.95.69.2 to this Compote as a FIC probably because original paper records were not found.
In March 2023 the paper file has been found that identifies Lois Cassatt Thayer as the donor in 1935. Mrs. Thayer was the daughter to Alexander Cassatt and his wife, Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt. Maria Lois Buchanan was the daughter to Rev. Dr. Edward Y. Buchanan, the youngest sibling to President James Buchanan.
One of three demitasse cups. Inside of cup is lined with gilt decor that extends over the cup's rim. The rim gilding connects to two vertical gilt bands and a band around the base forming a frame around varied handpainted landscape scenes; the cup handle is also gilded. The remainder of the outer body has a solid pink hue.

One Sheffield steel straight razor with a bone handle. Razor was a personal gift from President James Buchanan to John Henry William Bonitz on 4 May 1857. One side of the bone handle has a 'V' shaped break 1.375" from the end of the handle that is attached to the Sheffield steel shank. This side of the handle has a hand engraving: "1857 May 4 Wm Bonitz." Opposite side of bone handle has a hand engraving: "J.H.Wm Bonitz from Presdt. James Buchanan."
Handle Length: 5.50" With the blade extended the razor and handle length: 9.375"

One side of the bone handle has a 'V' shaped break 1.375" from the end of the handle that is attached to the Sheffield steel shank. Tip of blade has 1/8" chipped off. Light rust on all sides of the shank and blade.

Notes
During the transition between President Pierce and President Buchanan's administration in March 1857, "President Buchanan requested that William Bonitz, then clerk for Jefferson Davis, Secretary of War, be transferred to the White House as a clerk and messenger." The 15th President was pleased to have William as a member of his new administration. On May 4, 1857, President Buchanan gave William Bonitz a bone-handled Sheffield steel razor as a personal gift, telling the young man that he purchased the razor while he was serving as the United States Minister to the Court of St. James.
