Summary
A U.S. surveyor who resided in Lancaster County. He helped map many of the territories west of the Appalachians, surveyed the boundaries of the District of Columbia, continued and completed Pierre Charles L'Enfant's work on the plan for Washington, D.C., and served as a teacher in survey methods for Meriwether Lewis.

"In this story of the career of Colonel Henry Antes. the attemptis made to present the life of one who was so identified withvarious movements in the development of the frontier of Pennsylvania,as to constitute him a representative character. He wasbrought into intimate relations with the men who stand out asthe controling thinkers and workers of the Colonial regime. Inhis earlier days, Benjamin Franklin and John Dickinson werethe dominant factors, and the political strife was on the problemof the limitation of the powers of the proprietary government.In his later days, Andrew Jackson was the cynosure of all eyes,and the era of internal improvements was being ushered in. Betweenthese two periods occurred the war of the Revolution, thewar of 1812, and the careers of Washington, Jefferson, Adams,Madison, Monroe, Hamilton, and their compeers. But the activitiesof Col. Henry Antes were not so much with these men aswith the men they were leading. The Aid Society's provision of food ,clothing and other needs for soldiers during the Civil War is described. This included servicing soldiers from other parts of the country on troop trains transiting through Lebanon. The author details the tremendous amount of supplies collected by this organization and speculates that tens of thousands of soldiers were fed by these women.
