Description: Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland.

Description: Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester chatting about a letter from Lily’s Aunt Lathrop, the marriage of Miss Hayes and Bowman, the death of Uncle Edward’s child, Lily’s friend Samuel, Mary McKennan, Miss Muhlenberg of Reading, a coming trip through several cities of Pennsylvania and perhaps Virginia Springs with Uncle, Mr. Walker and Mr. and Mrs. Macey at Wheatland, Mr. Longenecker in North Carolina to visit a gold mine, an exhibition in Lititz to be attended by “all of us” spearheaded by Eskridge, Miss Dow, the “romance” of Miss Hetty and Mr. Bear, Mr. Hamilton (ex-minister to Denmark), and the annoyance and noise of the boys. Description: Letter of recommendation from James Buchanan to the President and Board of the Alexandria and Orange Railroad on behalf of Mr. William M. Wiley. "Gentlemen. The bearer hereof, Mr. William M. Wiley, in connection with Mr. Bernard McGrann and Col. Joseph Mosher, inform me that he intends to bid for a contract on your road; and at his request, I cheerfully state to you my knowledge of his character. I have been intimately acquainted with him for many years, and I know him to be an active, intelligent and enterprising man whose moral honesty and integrity have never been doubted. In case Messrs. McGrann, Mosher and himself should make sucha bid as would be acceptable to you, I have no doubt their contract would be faithfully and satisfactorily executed. The character of his tow partners as contractors in public works has been long and well established; and although Mr. Wiley has not had very much experience on this particular, I have no doubt he will prove himself to be entirely worthy of your confidence." Wheatland, 28 March 1850.

Admin/Biographical History: James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old.

I met him today in Lancaster and expressed a strong desire that you should obtain the place. I would send the letter to him directly, but I know not where he is. He told me he would leave Lancaster today, I think informed me where he was going, but I do not recollect the place." Wheatland, 5 November 1849.

"General Cameron is a tyrant at heart and is so selfish that he will never befriend any independent man who refuses to become his instrument. As a politician he is now 'on his last legs', confided in by none and distrusted by all. I most deeply regret that you should have been made the victim of his vengeance." Wheatland, 25 August 1851.

Admin/Biographical History: James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old.

Title: Letter from James Buchanan to Mr. William M. Wiley

Description: Letter from James Buchanan to Mr. William M. Wiley in which he discusses the Christiana Resistance and the Fugitive Slave Law, as well as the current state of politics, especially in Maryland. "The Christiana murder was a shocking affair. It will try the strength of the Fugitive Slave Law and I trust in God, that the court and jury of Lancaster County may do their duty. But is it not passing strange that Maryland alone, of all the slave holding states, should advocate a candidate for the Presidency who refused to vote for this very law? Without the Fugitive Slave Law, there would be no pretence of a compromise between the North and the South, all the other measures were favorable to the North and yet General Cass is glorified by his friends as the great author of the compromise. We are now struggling, and I trust successfully to maintain this law and upon its maintenance may probably depend the fate of the Union…" Wheatland, 24 September 1851.

Description: Photostatic copy of letter from Thaddeus Stevens to Col. S. Stevens regarding [Caledonia]. Thaddeus received the first communication from his manager that [the Confederates] were led on Tuesday to where the teams were and took all of the horses and mules and even crippled some horses. They took 4,000 pounds of bacon, molasses, contents of the store, $1,000 worth of corn from the mills and other grain, and $4,000 worth of bar iron. On Friday, they burned the furnace, sawmill, two forges and another mill. They kept the office and store room that night and burned them on Saturday. Damage was worse than Thaddeus expected and he doesn't know what the poor families will do; he must provide for their relief. Lancaster.
