Mayors elected by the councils were John Passmore, Samuel Carpenter, Nathaniel Lightner, and John Mathiot, all Democrats. The city councils

Lancaster was the last civilized outpost on the western frontier during the French and Indian wars its workshops already were turning out wagons, guns, clothing and numerous items for the protection of the Pennsylvania hinterland. Who can say how many of those artisans and mechanics "invented" day-by-day

stands un- matched in the history of the Common- wealth, and confers imperishable honor and credit on her. Her record is one which Lancaster should cherish for all time to come. May many in future years, inspired by the memory of her good work, be ready and willing to do likewise when the occasion arises
