Summary
The Ordnance Survey Memoirs are a uniquely detailed source for the history of the northern half of Ireland immediately before the Great Famine. They were written in the 1830s to accompany the Ordnance Survey maps, but were not published at the time. In these new editions they act as a 19th century Domesday book and are essential to the understanding of the cultural heritage of their communities. They document the landscape and situation, buildings and antiquities, land-holdings and population, and employment and livelihood of the parishes. This volume contains the Memoirs for 18 parishes in mid and east Tyrone describing Aughnacloy, Ballygawley, Beragh, and Caledon, as well as the areas adjacent to Lough Neagh and including the important towns of Coalisland, Cookstown, Dungannon, and Stewartstown.

"Wokeck shows how first the German system of immigration, and then the Irish system, evolved from earlier, haphazard forms into modern mass trans-oceanic migration. At the center of this development were merchants on both sides of the Atlantic who organized a business that enabled them to make profitable use of underutilized cargo space on ships bound from Europe to the British North American colonies. This trade offered German and Irish immigrants transatlantic passage on terms that allowed even people of little and modest means to pursue opportunities that beckoned in the New World. The eighteenth-century changes established a model for the better-known mass migrations of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which drew wave after wave of Europeans to the New World in the hope of making a better life than the one they left behind-a story that is familiar to most modern Americans." This scrapbook discusses many aspects about the Lancaster County Amish community. Several well-known Amish customs are mentioned throughout the newspaper clippings such as Rumspringa, barn raising, marriage season, and education. Other articles contain information about funeral customs, past-time activities, agriculture and other occupations. An article of special interest surrounds two Amish men arrested for religious beliefs.
