Pennsylvania historic marker on US Route 30 four miles northwest of Gettysburg reads :"Surveyed in 1766. Named for an estate in England.The Manor was about 6 miles wide and 12 miles long with the southern boundary at present Mason-Dixon Line. It was the second largest reserved estate of the Penns in Pennsylvania. The western boundary line of the Manor was near this point."

"As the Americans' principal site for incarcerating enemy prisoners of war, Lancaster stood at the nexus of two vastly different revolutionary worlds: one national, the other intensely local. Captives came under the control of local officials loosely supervised by state and national authorities. Concentrating the prisoners in the heart of their communities brought the revolutionaries' enemies to their doorstep, with residents now facing a daily war at home.Many prisoners openly defied their hosts, fleeing, plotting, and rebelling, often with the clandestine support of local loyalists... The challenge of creating an autonomous national identity in the newly emerging United States was nowhere more evident than in Lancaster, where the establishment of a detention camp served as a flashpoint for new conflict in a community already unsettled by stark ethnic, linguistic, and religious differences. Summary
These documents were created by representatives of the Paxton Boys as a written defence of their massacre of the Conestoga Indians. "A Declaration" was written before the Paxton Boys arrived in Germantown, and Matthew Smith and James Gibson completed the "Remonstrance" on February 13. Both documents were later published together as "A declaration and remonstrance of the distressed and bleeding frontier inhabitants of the province of Pennsylvania". This book is a facsimile of an early published copy of the texts.
