Pennsylvania Day program at Antietam, Maryland, Antietam Battlefield Commission of Pennsylvania
Description
Program for Pennsylvania Day at Antietam, Maryland dated Saturday, September 17, 1904. The Antietam Battlefield Commission of Pennsylvania had a dedication ceremony in honor of the monuments erected by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to mark the position of thirteen Pennsylvania commands engaged in the battle during the Civil War. The program details which monuments would be dedicated, the timeline of events for the event, and who would be involved in the ceremony. The national anthem, "America," is written on the back of the program.

Description
Transcription of a letter from William McCaskey to John Piersol "Jack" McCaskey, dated June 14,1865. Original located in Folder 2, Insert 11.
In the original letter to Jack, William laments that there was nothing to do but the occasional drill and the resulting complaints about their treatment by the government; discusses pros and cons of the regular army and a furlough for Cye. With a torn envelope. From Camp of the 79th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.
Admin/Biographical History
William Spencer McCaskey was born near Paradise, Lancaster County, in 1843. The family moved to Lancaster in 1855, where William received his education in public schools. And in 1859, he began an apprenticeship at the printing office of the Examiner, where he worked until the outbreak of the Civil War.
Just days after Fort Sumter was fired upon in April 1861, William joined the army and served with Company F of the 1st Pennsylvania Infantry until he mustered out in July. He joined Company B of the 79th Pennsylvania Regiment as 1st Sergeant in September of that year; this company of Lancastrians served under Col. Henry A. Hambright and Lt. Col. David Miles. They engaged in battles in Kentucky and Tennessee before they returned to Lancaster in 1864 and re-enlisted. Company B joined Gen. Sherman's army in May 1864. As they moved through Georgia and South Carolina in Sherman's March to the Sea, William wrote about the campaign, the residents, and affects that the Union Army's actions had on the South.
Capt. McCaskey mustered out in July 1865, and in spite of the many objections he had voiced about army life, he re-enlisted in 1866 after receiving a recommendation of the commission of second lieutenant from Thaddeus Stevens. William commanded troops throughout his career on the frontiers of Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, Texas, and Missouri and also during the Spanish-American War in Cuba and the Philippines. He retired at the rank of Major General in October 1907.

Letter from Thomas Welsh to Alice Welsh (daughter)
Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Alice. From Camp of 45th Regt. Penna. Vols. Letter discusses new leave rule put in place by General Hooker to allow more officers and soldiers to visit home and that it may be some time until he can leave since he is in command of the 3rd Brigade. Welsh reports that all are doing well in camp, but notes that a number of men have deserted. Asks family to write and sends love and kisses to all.

He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Description
Handwritten letter with envelope from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Mazie. From Otter Island, South Carolina. Letter includes a description of the small "house" constructed for him by soldiers and its furnishings; mentions the weather; and details promotions and assignments made by Welsh as well as the health and death of soldiers. Encourages family to write. Envelope addressed to Miss Mazie Welsh, Box 192, Columbia.

Description
Handwritten special orders from Headquarters, Department of Virginia, granting Colonel Thomas Welsh of the 45th Pennsylvania Volunteers a ten day leave of absence. Signed by Louis H. Pelouze, Assistant Adjutant General. Note: Major General Dix was in command of the Department from June 6, 1862 to April 6, 1863.

Discharge certificate. Private William Henry Lebkicher of Lancaster City, Pennsylvania, eighteen years old, enrolled on the second of August 1862 under Captain J. Miller Raub’s Company D 122nd Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, to serve nine months, was discharge from the service of the United States on the fifteenth of May 1863 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to David McGran Lebkicher
Description
Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to his father, David McGran Lebkicher, from camp near Fredericksburg, regarding Lt. Long leaving for home (Lancaster, PA). He mentions the return of Jacob Holabauck, who was one of three to become sick at Georgetown, and the 9th Army Corp going to Fortress Monroe. 14 February 1863.
In the a little bit below the center of the letter, there are two cuts on the first and fourth pages of the letter.
