Description
Letter from William Augustus Atlee to Gen. Joseph Reed regarding the condition of nearly 2,000 British prisoners-of-war (POWs) confined in barracks in Lancaster. There were about 800 prisoners of war stationed at the Lancaster Barracks, many sick with a "putrid fever," when more arrived from Virginia without knowledge of the conditions at Lancaster. Nearly 500 of the newly arrived prisoners-of-war were women and children. Married couples were encamped on the common outside the stockade and some in the old stables. Curbing the illness that was quickly spreading through the barracks and preventing it from spreading throughout Lancaster was the primary concern.

Description
Letter from Col. James Wood in Lancaster to Joseph Reed, President of Pennsylvania's Supreme Executive Council, regarding British prisoners of war and the overcrowded conditions of the barracks at Lancaster. Col. Wood provides an estimate of the number of soldiers with the British Army, as well as women and children traveling with them that must be accommodated; expresses the need for lumber for temporary shelters and a hospital; detail regarding the Continental and militia troops onsite as guards and who will be moving seamen to a barracks in Philadelphia; and requests instructions from Read on how to proceed.

Transcription of letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie. Location is "In Camp 8 miles West of Frederick." Letter written in the early morning, the day of the battle of South Mountain. Text details conditions in the chase of the Rebels through Frederick, Maryland and his feeling "that a great Battle will be fought between here and Hagerstown within a few days — perhaps today." Notes General Burnside's compliment of the 45th Regiment and tells Annie to "take the children and go to Lebanon" if Confederate forces should approach Columbia.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Transcription of letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie. From Antietam Creek, Maryland. Letter details the battles of South Mountain and Antietam, and his frustration with the credit he feels his brigade deserves going to other units. He expresses thorough disgust with the management of the army and the way the battle was conducted (evidently a reference to General McClellan).

Invitation for a ceremony at Ephrata (Camp Brandywine) in memory of two-hundred soldiers of the American Revolution
Description
An invitation to James Buchanan from a committee appointed to organize a military encampment at Ephrata (Camp Brandywine) for a ceremony to lay a cornerstone of a monument erected in memory of two-hundred soldiers of the American Revolution. The soldiers were “buried in the vicinity of the village, wounded at the Battle of Brandywine…died in the hospitals at Ephrata.” Lancaster.
