Title: Letter from James Buchanan to Mr. William M. Wiley

Description: Letter from James Buchanan to Mr. William M. Wiley in which he discusses the Christiana Resistance and the Fugitive Slave Law, as well as the current state of politics, especially in Maryland. "The Christiana murder was a shocking affair. It will try the strength of the Fugitive Slave Law and I trust in God, that the court and jury of Lancaster County may do their duty. But is it not passing strange that Maryland alone, of all the slave holding states, should advocate a candidate for the Presidency who refused to vote for this very law? Without the Fugitive Slave Law, there would be no pretence of a compromise between the North and the South, all the other measures were favorable to the North and yet General Cass is glorified by his friends as the great author of the compromise. We are now struggling, and I trust successfully to maintain this law and upon its maintenance may probably depend the fate of the Union…" Wheatland, 24 September 1851.

Admin/Biographical History: James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old.

Description: A letter from J. Ridenour, Jr. to James Buchanan. Ridenour explains how glad he was to hear Buchanan’s opinions on the war while he was visiting him at Wheatland. After leaving Wheatland, Ridenour spoke with Mr. Hamilton in Lancaster, who told him about Buchanan’s differing views on the war and the Confederacy. J. Ridenour, Jr. asks James Buchanan to confirm his notes on their conversation at Wheatland, that Buchanan did not agree with the Confederacy and would never have signed a compromise had he been President during the war, and that Mr. Hamilton was wrong. Harrisburg. With envelope and transcription. 1 October 1862.

Description: Letter from James Buchanan to Mr. William M. Wiley. "I now enclose for you a letter for Mr. McGrann. I met him today in Lancaster and expressed a strong desire that you should obtain the place. I would send the letter to him directly, but I know not where he is. He told me he would leave Lancaster today, I think informed me where he was going, but I do not recollect the place." Wheatland, 5 November 1849.

"General Cameron is a tyrant at heart and is so selfish that he will never befriend any independent man who refuses to become his instrument. As a politician he is now 'on his last legs', confided in by none and distrusted by all. I most deeply regret that you should have been made the victim of his vengeance." Wheatland, 25 August 1851.

Description: Letter from James Buchanan to Mr. William M. Wiley in which he describes life in London while working as the U. S. Ambassador and how much he misses Wheatland. "Allthough I have been kindly treated here my heart is still at home. I have now been in London more than a year and rejoice in the reflection that should Heaven spare my life and health, I shall return to my native land by the end of another year, never, never again to leave it. After all it is the only country on earth where a man feels himself to be a man. …I anticipate with heart felt pleasure the quiet, tranquility and retirement of Wheatland." London, 31 August 1854.

Admin/Biographical History: James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old.
