April 1764 issue of The Gentleman's Magazine includes article on massacre by Benjamin Franklin. 10 January entry in Charles Mason's diary contains discussion of massacre. Manuscript copy of remonstrance, signed by Matthew Smith and James Gibson and sent to Governor John Penn, lays out grievances against provincial government and justifies attacks on Native Americans.

Title: Letter from Thomas Welsh to Annie Welsh (wife)

Description: Transcription of letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie. From Antietam Creek, Maryland. Letter details the battles of South Mountain and Antietam, and his frustration with the credit he feels his brigade deserves going to other units. He expresses thorough disgust with the management of the army and the way the battle was conducted (evidently a reference to General McClellan).

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Description: Photocopies (2) of items originally printed in The Gentleman's Magazine. The original items are housed in Folder 4.; 1. Photocopy of "Account of the Murder of a Tribe of Indians in Pennsylvania," by Benjamin Franklin and submitted by "J. H." The Gentleman's Magazine, St. John's Gate, London, pages 173 to 178. The account provides a narrative of the Conestoga Massacre, decries the act, emphasizes that the victims were ostensibly under English protection, and unfavorably compares the massacre to guest right customs of other cultures. April 1764. Text varies slightly from the original pamphlet and from the reprint in The London Chronicle or Universal Evening Post, April 1764.; 2. Photocopy of "A Letter from Pennsylvania to a Friend in England; containing valuable Information with Respect to America," by L. S. Jardine, M.D., The Gentleman's Magazine, St. John's Gate, London, pages 1024 to 1025. Generally favorable description of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. This letter advertises Northumberland County as a developing community, a juxtaposition to the frontier described thirty years earlier. December 1795.

Admin/Biographical History: This collection contains items related to the Paxton Boys and Conestoga Massacre. April 1764 issue of The Gentleman's Magazine includes article on massacre by Benjamin Franklin. 10 January entry in Charles Mason's diary contains discussion of massacre. Manuscript copy of remonstrance, signed by Matthew Smith and James Gibson and sent to Governor John Penn, lays out grievances against provincial government and justifies attacks on Native Americans.

Title: Elizabethtown Insurance Company Records

Description: This collection contains documents and record books from the Elizabethtown Insurance Company. Items include records of new policies issued, policies cancelled, reinsurance policies, and books documenting taxes owed to the Elizabethtown Insurance Company. The collection also contains receipt books, personal agent books, and various notes and documents inserted into the lager record books. All documents are handwritten by multiple individuals and some books have missing, or broken spines. Many items are fragile, and caution should be used when turning pages to avoid further tearing and damage.

Admin/Biographical History: The Elizabethtown Insurance Company was formally chartered on December 23, 1843 as Farmers' Mutual Insurance Company. They started doing business January 31, 1844 and by June 1844 had applications from prospective policy holders for enough insurance to issue their first policy. The company was originally developed to insure against loss or damage by fire, but eventually began insuring other types of property damage. Farmers' Mutual Insurance Company moved multiple times; finding homes in Lampeter and Conestoga Townships, as well as Lancaster City. The company moved to Elizabethtown in 1925, and in July of 2009, Farmers' Mutual changed their name to Elizabethtown Insurance Company. In 2011 Elizabethtown Insurance Company stopped accepting new applications, and in 2012, the company relocated to Delaware.

Description: Photostatic copy of letter from Thaddeus Stevens to Col. S. Stevens regarding [Caledonia]. Thaddeus received the first communication from his manager that [the Confederates] were led on Tuesday to where the teams were and took all of the horses and mules and even crippled some horses. They took 4,000 pounds of bacon, molasses, contents of the store, $1,000 worth of corn from the mills and other grain, and $4,000 worth of bar iron. On Friday, they burned the furnace, sawmill, two forges and another mill. They kept the office and store room that night and burned them on Saturday. Damage was worse than Thaddeus expected and he doesn't know what the poor families will do; he must provide for their relief. Lancaster.
