Summary
"John Heckewelder was one of the most active and observant American travellers in the eighteenth century. His extensive journeys through our eastern woods in the service of the Moravian Church and, at times, of the government of the United States, have been preserved for us in a number of superb travel journals. Hitherto these either have lain unseen in manuscript collections or, if published, have appeared disconnectedly, so that few readers have suspected how engrossing they are and how illuminative of our early history when read as a continuous narrative."
