Samuel Gorton (1593 - 1677) was an early settler and civic leader of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and President of the towns of Providence and Warwick. He had strong religious beliefs which differed from Puritan theology and was very outspoken, and he became the leader of a small sect of converts known as Gortonists or Gortonites. Summary
John Kaufman was born in 1828 in Lancaster, PA., the son of Susan Brubaker and Benjamin Kaufman. The father was a miller. The family moved to Illinois in 1842. John Kaufman left for California in 1854 traveling to San Francisco by way of New York and Panama. He mined for 3 years and then had a bakery and restaurant business until moving back to Illinois in 1860.
