Handwritten letter with envelope from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Mazie. From Otter Island, South Carolina. Letter includes a description of the small "house" constructed for him by soldiers and its furnishings; mentions the weather; and details promotions and assignments made by Welsh as well as the health and death of soldiers. Encourages family to write. Envelope addressed to Miss Mazie Welsh, Box 192, Columbia.

Letter is good. There's a slight tear on one fold; also slight discoloration. Envelope is fair. The envelope is ragged on the edge, and the stamp has been cut out.

Transcription of letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie. Location is "In Camp 8 miles West of Frederick." Letter written in the early morning, the day of the battle of South Mountain. Text details conditions in the chase of the Rebels through Frederick, Maryland and his feeling "that a great Battle will be fought between here and Hagerstown within a few days — perhaps today." Notes General Burnside's compliment of the 45th Regiment and tells Annie to "take the children and go to Lebanon" if Confederate forces should approach Columbia.

He expresses thorough disgust with the management of the army and the way the battle was conducted (evidently a reference to General McClellan).

Letter from Annie Welsh to Thomas Welsh describing the chaos surrounding the burning of the Wrightsville-Columbia bridge
Description
Handwritten letter to Thomas Welsh from his wife, Annie in Columbia, Lancaster County. Letter describes the approach of the Confederate army to Columbia; the fleeing of citizens from York County acrosss the bridge; the reactions of various people in Columbia; her determination to stay in Columbia; and the terrible site of seeing the river bridge on fire. See MG0828 SeriesE F04 for related envelope. Note: General Welsh was at Vicksburg at the time, commanding the 1st Division of the 9th Corps in support of General Grant.

Autobiography of Thomas Welsh that was probably written in his late teens. This history details Thomas Welsh's work and schooling from age 8 through about age 16. Several people are mentioned, including an unnamed uncle. It appears to be the start of a longer document, except that the back of the page is an unrelated document. This is the first page of a 24 page package, apparently written variously in his late teens/early twenties, and subsequently bound together, probably by Thomas Welsh himself.

The first 2 pages are missing, and p. 3 is TW-A-XX-01(a), on the backside of this. The rest of the pages are bound upside down (relative to the first 4 pages), including TW-A-XX-01(d) and TW-A-XX-01(e), which are part of the same folio sheet as TW-A-XX-01(a) and TW-A-XX-01.

Miscellaneous notes and sketches written by Thomas Welsh, including: 1) A sketch about the amount of money the public had to pay for Queen Victoria's wedding, evidently copied from the Philadelphia Ledger. 2) A notice of the death of General Thomas Sumpter [Sumter] of South Carolina, evidently copied from the Philadelphia Ledger, June 23, 1840. 3) A note about the population of Lowell, Mass. being top heavy in favor of females, evidently from the Times, Philadelphia. 4) A note about the suicide death (by starvation) of John Jordan, from the Columbia Spy. 5) A mock newspaper article about Thomas Welsh leaving Columbia August 29, 1843 for Baltimore and Washington.

Resolution acknowledging Thomas Welsh's membership in the Order of United American Mechanics, Susquehanna Council
Description
Handwritten certificate of a resolution honoring Thomas Welsh for his patriotic service in Mexico, "where he has sealed with his blood his devotion to his Country." Resolution adopted unanimously at a meeting of the Susquehanna Council No. 31 of the Order of United American Mechanics. Dated September 16, 1847 and published in the Columbia Spy on September 18, 1847. Framed, in poor condition.

Handwritten autobiography of Brigadier General Thomas Welsh. Mentions his birth in May 1824 and his military career beginning with his enlistment during the Mexican War through October 1861. Although undated, this was clearly written after November 29, 1862 when he was brevetted to Brigadier (more likely it was written shortly before or after he was commissioned in March 1863). Handwritten autobiography of Thomas Welsh, written in third person. Text sketches his military career through the Battle of South Mountain. This is an unfinished draft, with portions crossed out. Initially written in July 1862 while he was at Hilton Head, South Carolina then the section about Acquia Creek, Virginia and South Mountain, Maryland were added in pencil after the Battle of South Mountain, September 14, 1862.
