Bowfront mahogany veneer chest of drawers in the Hepplewhite style. Four drawers have progressing depths from the top to the bottom, each with overpressed drawer pulls two per drawer. At the top center of each drawer is a brass escutcheon keyhole. The top of the chest and each drawer are decorated with satin wood inlay. Chest is supported at its base by four french feet which feature a slightly outswept bracket foot combined with a valence skirt.

Linen edging around pale red frame. Adhered to a cream colored fabric within frame are eight (4 inch x 3 inch) watercolor paintings. 5 sets of Asian men (1 enthroned in middle) and 3 sets of women in Asian dress, mostly upper class.
One of three framed by The James Buchanan Society in 1938.

Notes
Painted Asian people on small oblongs of bamboo pith. They are painted with heated paint with a small brush (perhaps only two or three hairs). The heated paint on the bamboo gives the raised effect that looks like embroidery.

Information found in 'Restoration Committee Report 5/1/1957- 'Possibly an acquisition from Elizabeth Logan Payne-had belonged to Buchanan-Payne inherited the dresser from Gen. & Mrs. Logan who were friends of Buchanan in Washington.
Walnut chest of drawers. Two small drawers mounted side by side just below the top of the chest with three full-width drawers below; each drawer has two glass drawer pulls and a centered, brass escutcheon keyhole. The chest has recessed side panels with matching crotch-grain walnut veneer. The chest sits on four turnip feet for overall support.
English mahogany chest of drawers. Hardware has a classic oval shape with ring pulls. Shell design at center of ring pulls. Federal style, with four drawers. Each drawer has their original oval pressed brass drawer pulls, two per drawer. At the top center of each drawer is a brass escutcheon key hole. The top of the chest and each drawer are decorated with satinwood inlay. Came from the home of Dr. Alexander Speer, Washington, DC. Dr. Alexander Speer was James Buchanan's first cousin. Donated to Wheatland by Dr. Speer's granddaughter, Katherine Speer Powell.
Power of attorney granted under the will of the late Stephen Pleasonton of Washington granting the power to James Buchanan for his daughters, Laura and Clementina, in which Buchanan outlines terms under which the daughters can receive funds for their own use followed by a listing of the loans and stocks and their value received from their father’s will. Witnessed by Charles R. Frailey (alderman) and Charles Denues (notary public). Lancaster.

This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Bill of Sale transferring ownership of The Safety Buggy Company of Lancaster to Byron G. Dodge in consideration of the sum of $60,000. Includes goods and chattels, buggies, carriages, vehicle parts, and machinery. Dated September 15, 1899.
Witnessed by President A.G. Reinoehl, President and Leon G. Dodge, Secretary.
G.W. Dodge & Son was founded in Berlin, New York in 1871 and relocated to Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1876. In 1885, G.W. Dodge's eldest son, Byron G. Dodge, became president of the company. The company eventually merged with the Lancaster Cork Works and the American Cork Company and by 1895 was known as the Lancaster Cork Company. The company combined with several other cork companies in 1895 (including Armstrong) and became the site of the Closure Plant for the Armstrong Cork Company.
