Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane recounting the news from Wheatland including Annie’s arrival; Mr. Jenkins’ speech; dining at the McEvoys’; Judge Black’s enquiry about Harriet’s visit; Professor Falk’s new bride (a widow named Charles with two children); Buchanan’s visit to Mr. Baker’s including other guests Mr. Brinton, Mr. Hopkins (absent with daughter in Philadelphia), and Miss Emily; Miss Dougherty’s reception; Harriet’s visit to Washington should include Lily and Mr. Macalester; Dr. Carpenter’s treatment of Mr. Heister; Buchanan’s feelings on McClellan’s changes in the election; the vigor of the Democratic Party; and Miss Harriet and Miss Blanche as well as Miss Hetty’s good wishes. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore.
