The Buchanan home in the 19th century, with lights on inside, on front porch and lamppost in right foreground. A woman in a pink dress and bonnet is being assisted as she alights from a black horse-drawn carriage. The man helping her is attired in a formal black suit with top hat. The driver and a third gentleman are seated inside the carriage. Although flowers cascade from a planter in the foreground, the orange leaves indicated fall.
The artist signed Florence Taylor 1970 on lower right beside lamp post.
Written on the back: "Purchased at Wheatland Fallfest Auction held in front of building 5 October 1978. From Wheatland Collection. Used as cover illustration on 36-page booklet "Tour of mansion in color." Hung in the Florence Starr Taylor Show at The First Presbyterian Church, Lancaster Town Fair, October 20 and 21. 1980. Oil painting of Mrs. Alexander Hood seated on red chair with draped red curtain behind. Her dark brown hair is parted in the center and she is wearing a white covering with ruffles along sides covering her ears. The two wide sashes/ties hang down to her waist. A dainty lace collar piece, unattached, is around her neck with opening in front. She wears a black dress with gathers from a front vertical seam that ends in a point below her waist. Long sleeve visible on her left arm has two sections of gathers on the upper arm. Her left hand rests on her lap.

Some crackling overall. Some paint rubbed off above wooden edges. Some fine vertical streaks on woman's dress, left elbow. A small spot on right side of painting above red chair. Canvas nailed to stretcher bars in tact.

Ann Slaymaker, born November 13, 1925 was the daughter of S.C and Martha Slaymaker.
Miniature portrait of Frances O. Swarr by J. Henry Brown. Oval image of Swarr is surrounded by a red velvet oval contained in a rectangular gold-colored plaster frame. Portrait is of a woman in a white dress, shoulders exposed; straight dark hair parted in middle. Part of a set with 2021.029.001 (Hiram B. Swarr). typed label on back identifies subject and artist. Framed by Wunderly Brothers, Pittsburgh.
John Henry Brown's career began in Philadelphia in 1845, where he painted most of his sitters. Brown often preferred to take daguerreotypes of his sitters and use those as guides for his miniatures, rather than having the person sit for him. He claimed it was easier to work from a small image than from a life-size model. (Smithsonian)

The "H.L. Green Co." sign is from above the entrance door of the "Five and Dime" store at Orange and Queen Streets in Lancaster, PA.
The name of the company is printed in white upper-case letters on a green background. White circular seals appear at before and after the name. A brass plate is attached to the wood frame, bottom center: "Mgr. J. Robert Taylor"
"The late J. Robert Taylor managed both the H.L. Green and the McCrory stores in downtown Lancaster during the 1980-90's...I would like these signs displayed both in memory of an era of retailing gone by and in memory of Mr. Taylor. (written by F.A. Wark)
Faded duplicate of 2005.005.2a. Black paint faded. 3 wide strokes of cream-colored paint on left. Missing paint. Piece of lower left corner missing. Appears to have been used for b-b-gun practice with numerous bubbles on the back. Also dirt on the back.
Small box with faded blue paper cover slides fully into either end of the cardboard sleeve, like a match box. A colored drawing, an outdoor setting with some of the pieces, cover the entire top surface. Beneath the drawing on lower left is "10/2"; on lower right is "Made in Western Germany." Kit includes 13 pieces: 13 pieces: 2 ducks; 1 pig; 1 horse; 1 farmer; 1 tree; 1 water bucket; and 5 wooden fence rails.
Small oil painting on paper of Mrs. General (Abigail Ann Bailey) John Steele. Head to waist, Mrs. Steele is seated holding a red bound book in her left hand with right hand crossing her left wrist .Fine detail, especially dots on bonnet fabric and designs on sleeve cuffs. Copy of portrait by Jacob Eichholtz.
She and John Steele married on March 4, 1784. She died two weeks after her husband, on March 13, 1827.
On reverse, written in black ink in cursive: "Property of and loaned by/ Mary Steele Slaymaker/ Mrs.. H.E. Slaymaker/ 149 W. Duke St./Lancaster/Pa."
