Walking Cane Belonging to James Buchanan
Description
Cane made of maple owned by James Buchanan. Long, tapered with tip and 2-part handle of ivory. Handle grip is in the shape of a lily or trumpet flower. Lower section is elaborately carved w/ high-relief eagle on a background of leaves, stars and banner w/ "E PLURIBUS UNUM". Inscribed in black on side of handle in script is "James Buchanan / from E.C.L." Believed to be gift of Elizabeth Chapman Lawrence, friend of Buchanan and Harriet Lane.

Cigar carrying case. Cardboard cylinder. 1 piece slides into the other, with 3/4" insert with label: "NONE ARE GENUINE BUT THOSE BEARING THE NAME OF THE FIRM IN FULL KIRBY, BEARD & CO. And the trademark, an elephant's head on a coronet." Tradmark is pictured on the label.
Outside covered with paper with design of brown dots in curving lines on tan background. Some writing in ink on detached round end piece (98.21.b)-- difficult to read "185?".

Description
Large rectangualr rosewood veneer box with hinged lid and pressed metal oval-shaped handle centered on lid. The underside of the lid has a mirror that is hinged with a top swinging catch that comes down to convert it to a writing surface. Several separate velvet-lined compartments of varying size comprise the inside of the box. There is cock-bead molding around lower edge of lid and the keyhole is centered just below the front lip of the lid; on the short end of the oblong chest is a 2 inch high wide drawer with a keyhole and lined with velvet.

Description
Black lacquer exterior on oblong Gutta-percha container. Central portions of front, back and lid are decorated with gold-outlined 4-lobed design that contains inlaid irredescent flowers. The lid's decoration included 2 additional curved inlays on both ends. A chain of leaves painted gold and green borders the edge of the lid. Bold painted branches with painted flowers decorate both curved ends of the container. The paper-lined base includes a narrow 2-pocketed sleeve for thin items. The fabric-lined lid with a central strip contains four spaces to hold narrow items.

Description
Black ostrich feather fan has twenty 9-inch long tortoise shell spines. 2 end spines are wide for entire length. 18 are wide for 5.5 ins. and narrow to 1/4 inch for remaining length. Narrow portions support feathers that are glued to them.
All spines are attached at the base by a rod/pin attached to a u-shaped metal loop that holds an 8-inch black silk-wrapped cord with braided finger ring and black passementary tassel that slides up to hold the feathers/fan together.
