Pen & ink map titled "A View of the Citie of Lancaster from the East." Aerial perspective looking down onto buildings and trees. Chestnut, Orange and King streets fade into hills in the distance. The seal of the city appears lower left and on the right is a shield. Upper left shows a banner with title of the map and a banner on the upper right details some history of Lancaster. Identification of significant sites as well as history notes are written on the map. The artist, John Jarvis has signed the map on the lower right border.

Biographical Notes on Charles X. Carlson
Born in Minn., 1902. A baker's apprentice at 12. worked in the iron mine, lumber camps and as a seaman for 3 years.
Studied art, at: Crane Technical College, Chicago, Ill.; Chicago Art Institute, 4 years; National Academy of Design, New York, 3 years; Art Students League, N.Y.; also in Europe --Antwerp and Munich.
Illustrator, cartoonist, mural painter and teacher in N.Y for 12 years. Mural for New Zealand Bldg at N.Y. World's Fair, also Bordens, Ford and General Motors and others.
Originator of Elsie's ancestors for the Borden Co. Murals: Linen Center, N.Y.; Ansonia Hotel, N.Y.; York, Pa.; Manheim, Pa.; Costa Rica and Guatemala, C.A.
Staff Artist and cartoonist on War Times, Pentagon, for the Bureau of Public Relations during WW II. 2 years painting, lecturing and exhibiting in the 21 American Republics in cooperation with the U.S. State Dept. in furthering the good neighbor policy. Provided two free travelling exhibits of the 21 American Republics which are exhibited from coast to coast.
Author of a series of Art Instruction books (20) that have sold in the millions. Publisher and distribution of the Carson Pocket Art Books at Kirks Mills.
Exhibited widely thru the Americas. Painting in many well know collections. Now working on a Pictorial History of Lancaster County. (source unknown)

Original watercolor on paper. Large trees in the background surround four farm buildings. A red 2-story structure on left is abutted by a gray building with doors facing the open space. A man and a boy face this building. A small boy runs from two chatting women. Beyond them a large yellow building shows windows on the second floor and the front contains two round colorful barn signs. A blacksmith's shop is on the right. Signed 'CXCarlson 1960,' lower left in painting.

Carlson moved to Lancaster County in 1947 and lived in Kirk's Mill near Quarryville. He was commissioned to illustrate "Old Lancaster" and do 150 paintings of historic Lancaster buildings.

Charcoal portrait on poster board ('Nat Mat Cardboards').. Drawn from neck up, "Thaddeus Stevens" is looking to the viewer's right. Artist J.A. Jolly has printed his name beneath Stevens' left shoulder. Cut-out printed black uppercase letters are attached beneath the drawing: "THADDEUS STEVENS." The surface appears to have been sprayed with a matte finish.
On reverse, written on taped-on white piece of paper: "Drawn by/ James Arthur Jolly/ April 1967/ 17 Mary St./ Millersville, Pa./Asst. Prof., M.S.C./ Memb. Lanc. Co. Hist. Soc."
