One pair of Chippendale brass and iron andirons. Contains large reeded ball at top, three graduated small balls center and large ball at base. Snake turned base with two small balls each side of snake turning. Rear of base small turned ball with double column base.
American Empire brass andirons date to c. 1847-1850. The brass uprights feature small elongated ball-shaped finials with ring-turnings. The top finials surmount larger elongated ball-shaped finials with ring-turnings that surmount octagonal-shaped columns supported by raised scroll bases on ball feet and a wrought iron back for holding logs.

American empire-transitional Victorian armchair. Walnut frames the upholstered back and crest, arm rests have upholstered cushions terminating in a wide scroll surmounting the seat frame that features a serpentine apron. Brocade front legs feature ring-turnings; back legs are squared and canted. Back has slightly arched crest, back rails join to legs that terminate in casters.

Bag made of stiff black leather with a rolled leather handle at top. The handle is attached to a brass-plated iron frame with side hinges. The leather bag opens at the top, is 8.5" deep and has two interior pockets.
Commemorative banner of Pennsylvania Coat of Arms and U.S. shield. Embroidered silk banner in original wooden frame. Embroidery measures about five feet square and shows an American spread eagle and the U.S. shield between four tasseled American flags.
Provenance
Banner was stored in a public building near Cleveland, Ohio for several decades (unknown how banner reached Ohio or why it was stored there). It reached the art market in the 1960s. It is believed to be from the Japanese delegation of 1860.
Banner is believed to have been a gift to President Buchanan in 1860 by the first Japanese mission to the White House. According to documentation from Thomas L. Hughes, the Pennsylvania Coat of Arms was regulated in 1875 to have two white horses and 'no
four strands of wicket at one narrow end of the basket is broken off.

In her letter that accompanied the donation, Mrs. Myers informed the museum that "Mrs. Sherry said the basket was used for pretzels.
Mrs. Myers added that "Mrs. Sherry lived on the Old Factory Road near the Old Factory Bridge until about 15 years ago (1925) gave this pretzel basket and bread knife to me. They were given to her by Hetty Parker for whom Mrs. Sherry worked in the Buchanan home for 19 years.

Decorative porcelain foot bath, part of a larger toilet set from Bohemia. Made by Robert Persch's Porcelain Factory in Mildeneichen, which was located in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic. Body of the foot bath has a white background with a floral/leaf design in blue, orange and gold.
Built-in 3' deep by 5.5' wide zinc bathtub with brass faucets, shower head, diverter valve, and wood surrounded with zinc lined drain pan. Attached at the south end of the tub is a bidet.

Notes
While it is not in practice to catalog fixtures within the house, the James Buchanan Foundation had previously assigned an accession number to this fixture in 1936. As a result, the bathtub has been cataloged as a place holder for its accession number.
Commerically advertised as a 'Hat Tub,' this portable tin tub was typically setup for use near the kitchen range. The tub is circular and made of tin with a round center bowl. The sides slant up and out in seven sections; one of the sections is topped with a flat seat for the bather. Each of the seven sections is japanned with a gold stencilled geometric pattern decoration. The underside of the tub is painted green. On one side of the bather's seat is a curved tin strip that holds soap and a bathing sponge. A raised semicircular tin piece creates a seat back.
