Summary
A historical novel, depicting a fugitive slave rebellion in Christiana, Pennsylvania, the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch country. The plot is developed from factual accounts of the incident that happened on Sept. 13, 1851.The protagonist is Will Parker, a young fugitive slave from Maryland, who is determined to end kidnapping and recapture of fugitives. In the melee a slave owner, trying to take slaves he claimed were his, was killed. William Parker and his freedom fighters and several white abolitionists were charged with treason. In the subsequent trial in Philadelphia's Independence Hall, they were acquitted. Parker, however, had eluded an intensive manhunt by way of the Underground Railroad, and went to Canada.
