The Boys Brigade, considered a forerunner of the Boy Scouts, was made up of boys between the ages of twelve and eighteen. The Brigade was a religious group organized along strictly military lines to attract boys. The Boys Brigade movement was started in Scotland by W. A. Smith, secretary of a Sunday school, who felt that the attracttion of the military would be a fine means of reaching boys and enlisting them with greater loyalty to church and Sunday school. Lancaster's Seventh Regiment was led by its founder, The Rev. Cudlipp, who came to Lancaster in 1889 to organize a Reformed Episcopal church. In 1900, he introduced the military as an attraction, to win boys to higher ideals and aspirations.
