Watercolor of flowers
Description
Watercolor of flowers done on tiny rectangular piece of wove paper. Two large red blooms with large, hairy green leaves, two smaller detached leaves and two flower buds. Detailing lines of black ink on three largest leaves.
Signed on reverse in black ink is "E Haverstick" beside a large smudged area of ink. Piece was perhaps made for a student as a reward of merit or simply a remembrance. Haverstick is believed to be a schoolmaster and was active in the 1830s.

Subject Helen A. Thurlow (1889- ?) was the daughter of Thomas and Annie Thurlow of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, from 1904-1912, where Thomas Anshutz was head instructor. He painted her portrait, seated sideways, and the portrait is thought to be during Ms. Thurlow's student years. See:
Portrait of Helen Thurlow, pastel on canvas, c. 1910 by Thos. Anschutz
(Portrait sold by Hammer Galleries, NY, NY.)
Annie T. Lang was painted by her mentor William Merritt Chase in 1911. This O/C ptg. is owned by the PMA & has accession # 1928-63-4. The label reads:
"William Merritt Chase was an early pioneer of Impressionist aesthetics in the United States and enjoyed immense popularity during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A celebrated teacher, Chase likely first met his protégée Annie Lang (1885-1918) in 1901 when she enrolled in one of his annual summer schools on Long Island. Painted in the summer of 1911 outside Florence, Italy, while Chase was on one of his many extended sojourns in Europe, this portrait of Lang suggests the close, perhaps intimate, relationship between the two artists. The painting incorporates the rich fabrics, ornate décor, and elegant attire that characterize Chase's interior scenes".

Title
Louis Roseboro's Collection of Hattie Brunner Information
Description
Louis Roseboro's Collection of Hattie Brunner Information contains newspaper clippings, magazine articles, pamphlets, and biographical information regarding Hattie Brunner's work as an artist, and her success as an antiques collector and dealer. Items in the collection range in date from 1962 through 2008.
Admin/Biographical History
Hattie Brunner was born on November 27, 1889 in East Cocalico Township, Lancaster Pennsylvania, to Abiram and Mary Klapp. In 1896, her father died, and seven-year-old Hattie was sent to a dairy farm where she worked to earn her room and board. At age 10, Hattie left the dairy farm, and began working for the Brunner family- where she stayed until she was 18. In 1917, Hattie was awarded her Teacher's Certificate from the Philadelphia Musical Academy, and in 1918 she married Raymond Brunner, and moved back into the home she had worked in as a young girl. Hattie opened her antique shop "The Tulip Shop" in the early 1930's, and operated it until the early 1980's. Hattie started painting in the late 1950's and soon became as known for her art, as she was for her antiquing.
