Description
Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson describing his departure from Staten Island to the Battery of Manhattan to board a ship to Bermuda; describes in detail the rough voyage through the Gulf Stream; describes his first view of the island and then a lengthy description of the horticulture and other aspects of the island; among his acquaintances along the way were Frank, who saw him off; a German gentleman who almost missed the boat; Mr. Murphy; the Outerbridges; Mr. O and his uncle Harvey, Ellie, Miss Lollie O., Mrs. Butterfield, Mrs. Bullafus and Miss Lotte and Mrs. Beille; and Aunt Sidney. Some fading throughout. Envelope with address of Hamilton Hotel, Jno. W. Dodge & Harnett, Bermuda back flap detached, no stamp, with Hamilton postmark addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Stapleton, Staten Island, New York.

Description
Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson lamenting his boredom, with the only excitement being the arrival of a steamer; his longing for a letter from her, even though the boat with the letter had trouble docking; replies to news from her letter including news of Dody, little Esther’s passing, her father Will Buchanan’s and Bib Christy’s grief; wants her to handle some financial affairs; wanted to go to other islands but the weather is too hot; made the acquaintance of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Smith of Watertown; hopes Mr. Gray is called to the church; Lollie Outerbridge reports that Mr. Cartwright is interim Pastor; mentions Mr. and Mrs. Butterfield and Terrie Roosevelt, the Murphys, Mr. Perrsett, Mr. Ball, Mr. Wilson, and Mr. Magruder; the climate is warm and damp with little variation in temperature and many cloudy days; describes the island with its many plants, the results of a series of soundings showing that Bermuda is a coral island; is enamored by the variation of colors in the sea and of the scenery in general; hasn’t bathed in the harbor because of his rheumatism; sends greetings to her father, Aunt Sidney, Willie, Frank, his son, Miss Outerbridge; hopes to be home very soon. Envelope addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Care of W. C. Anderson Stapleton, Staten Island, New York no stamp, New York postmark; Per Steamship Carrissa in upper left corner. Hamilton Hotel, Hamilton, Bermuda.

Henry to Louisa Anderson talking about being with his yacht all day; that Uncle Edward is well; Aunt is visiting the Lodis; Cousin Alice seems about the same; they wish he had brought her and the baby; Dody comes tomorrow for the weekend; has trouble keeping awake when company arrives; has not heard from Mr. Parker or Mr. Magruder; hopes Frank will tell James Davis that he would like to attend his wedding; and the birds are singing even as the morning mists hang on the fields. Envelope disintegrating with postmark and loose stamp addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry care of Dr. W. C. Anderson, Stapleton, Staten Island, NY. Oxford, Friday, 6 August [1875].

Henry to Louisa Anderson telling her that her latest letter had not arrived and that he was greatly concerned about her father’s illness; Robbie was a good boy sitting by his side and eating in the regular dining room; awaiting her instructions as to whether she and the children will return; Dody might go to college; sailing and weather are good; Cousin Annie is going to Atlantic City; Dr. King feels better; Aunt Sidney has been affected by Dr. Anderson’s illness; Frank might not go to the Navy; Dr. Vanderpoel will have to deal with any yellow fever outbreak and Dr. [Eradeston] Is on vacation. Henry to Louisa Anderson providing a menu to show that they are eating well; recounting his encounter with a major storm on the sea between Martha’s Vineyard and Newport, Rhode Island, fearing for the lives of Ives, Shirley, and himself; they miraculously landed on a sandy beach and avoided the rocks; rescued, he made arrangements to reclaim the yacht; enjoyed the celebration at the yacht harbor with fireworks, his was the smallest yacht ; cites a number of yellow fever cases of Dr. [Leery] and Frank; hopes they are all right; gives love to her father, aunt, brother, and the children. Envelope has letterhead of Parker House, New Bedford addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Stapleton, Richmond Co, New York. With postmark and loose stamp. New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Henry to Louisa Anderson discussing an article of Colonel Thompson to appear in the Gazette; money matters need a rest because of the expense of the yacht; is upset with his bad luck; Frank should know that the contract James Buchanan Henry prepared is with her father but that Mr. Kentgen knows its content and Mr. Rerens has a copy; hopes to take a trip with her in the autumn; advises the family to show understanding and compassion to Aunt Sydney in her weakened mental state. Envelope has letterhead of Parker House, New Bedford addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Stapleton, Richmond Co., New York with postmark and two stamps, one loose. New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Henry to Louisa Anderson expressing satisfaction that things are going well at home; gives an account of his excursions of the last few days; comments on the unusually warm weather; visited a colonel to see Mrs. Wright, an old friend, but met only her three daughters and her husband; hoped to see Miss Dora but was disappointed; the Braytons, Binghams, and Ruevals left and not many people left; Randy could not come; hopes Frank is improving in health and business; some of Ives’s relatives [ ___ ] visited the yacht; Captain Clark and granddaughter dropped by and she liked the picture of Jamie; hopes to be reunited soon; apparently Colonel Thompson’s article was not published. Envelope addressed to Mrs. J Buchanan Henry, Stapleton, Richmond Co., New York with three postmarks and loose stamp. Watch Hill.

Henry to Louisa Anderson reiterating his concern about her father’s imminent arrival and his disappointment of not being able to be there to help; gives the remainder of his itinerary; vows never to travel again until she is by his side; dislikes Richard Wagner’s music; instructs her to pay Dody’s medical school bills; summaries his travel expenses and that of the family; comments on the falling stock market; will ask Mrs. Robson if Belle can come to them; hopes to see Frank in Nice; and speculates on berths for her father and Miss I to get them home sooner. Henry to Louisa Anderson acknowledging receipt of her letters and one from Frank; outlines his plans for completing of his tour; comments on his health and plans to take the children on an outing; compares travel on the Danube to that of the Rhine; enjoys the company of a young, well-educated Polish gentlemen who accompanied him on a tour or Vienna, Trieste, and Venice; describes the lavishness of the Gondoliers’ Regatta; comments on receiving her latest letters and on the death of Garfield and the accession of Arthur; and would like to pay Belle’s expenses so that she might visit. Envelope addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Garden City, Long Island New York America postmark and partial stamp, second stamp of Hotel Grande Bretanga in two large pieces with heavy water damage and note in a later hand: Letters from Mr. Henry during his trip to Europe 1881. Hotel Great Bretagna via Torino, Milan.
