contains an interesting account of a court martial held in Lan- caster borough during the Revolutionary war, at which time two spies were tried, found guilty and executed. From local sources, it is discovered that this trial took place before the middle of March, and yet an account of it did not appear in

represented. Fortunately, a number of these letters have been preserved. I am quoting from several of them such portions as relate to Lancaster and its inhabitants. They throw an interesting side-light on conditions as they existed in that eventful year of 1777. September 24th, 1777, James Lovell wrote to

inscription until 1858, when it cracked while being rung for a service. Sub- sequently, it was recast, and to-day bears the following inscrip- tion: "Pack & Chapman of London. Fecit. St. James's Church, Lancaster, Pennsylvania." The Lancaster County Historical Society has in its collections �the original

letters, autographs, etc., by his uncle, the later George M. Steinman, president of the Lancaster County Historical Society for twenty years,—from the time of its re-organization in 1896, until the end of 1916.
