Little written material remains from these women who reared large families and made homes for them, who measured their lives by the church's standards. This vibrant collection of photographs, however, tells a remarkable story of "girl crowds," courting couples, multi-generational harvest/gardening work parties, high-spirited quilters, purposeful caregivers. This scrapbook discusses many aspects about the Lancaster County Amish community. Several well-known Amish customs are mentioned throughout the newspaper clippings such as Rumspringa, barn raising, marriage season, and education. Other articles contain information about funeral customs, past-time activities, agriculture and other occupations. An article of special interest surrounds two Amish men arrested for religious beliefs.
