Documents filed with the Court of Common Pleas by municipalities in Lancaster County placing liens on real estate. The overwhelming majority were filed by the City of Lancaster. The next greatest number were filed by the Borough of Columbia. Other liens were filed by the boroughs of Adamstown, Ephrata, New Holland, Quarryville, Strasburg, and Washington. The liens show docket book and page numbers, the name of property owner, and then describe the location and size of the property along with buildings and improvements, the amount of money in question, and the cause for the assessment. These documents were recorded in Municipal Lien Docket Books 2 through 5, and are arranged in the order they appear therein. This leads to an oddity in filing order, in that the last 45 liens in Book 4 fall out of chronological sequence, overlapping and extending slightly beyond the dates of the liens in Book 5. Handwritten, plus a very few typewritten.
Preferred Citation: Title or description of item, date (day, month, year), Collection, Title and Object ID, Box #, Folder #, LancasterHistory, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Information for each lien has been recorded in an Excel Spreadsheet which is available in the Research Center and the attached PDF.

Resolution acknowledging Thomas Welsh's membership in the Order of United American Mechanics, Susquehanna Council
Description
Handwritten certificate of a resolution honoring Thomas Welsh for his patriotic service in Mexico, "where he has sealed with his blood his devotion to his Country." Resolution adopted unanimously at a meeting of the Susquehanna Council No. 31 of the Order of United American Mechanics. Dated September 16, 1847 and published in the Columbia Spy on September 18, 1847. Framed, in poor condition.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.
In wooden frame. Poor condition; in need of conservation. Piece of packing tape stuck on face of document and has pulled off some of the ink and surface of the paper. NEDCC/Northeast Document Conservation Center did a preliminary examination; see email correspondence NEDCC, August 7, 2019.
