Multicolored Vorschrift done by schoolmaster/fraktur artist Christian Strenge on rectangular laid paper. Bordered in a yellow band with red corners. German script text has an elaborately embellished large upper case letter "K" at upper left and multicolored floral design filling entire right side, surmounted by a distinctive yellow crested bird. Colors are red, yellow, blue and green. Modern frame.
Hand-printed in black ink above the letter "K" is the name of recipient, David Neff. Signed at the bottom by Strenge in German script: "Written in Hempfield Township in the year 1801 by Christian Strenge." Inscribed on reverse in script is "David Neff" in black ink.
The text begins with Psalm 95:1-4, "Kommt lasset(?) uns dem...," followed by two alphabets, the first in upper case and the second in lower case, and finally the numerals 1 - 14. (See translation on copy of nearly identical fraktur in file).

Provenance: This Vorschrift was recently found in a book in the library of Sarah Stauffer on Lime Spring farm along the Marietta Pike. Consigned to sale at Conestoga Auction Co. and purchased 29 June 1998 with funds from V. Ronald Smith ($9,725) and the Donegal Chapter of the D.A.R. ($125).
John J. Snyder, Jr. researched Stauffer genealogy to discover a relationship to David Neff. See letters & charts in this file which explain the likelihood that the fraktur may have passed from Neff (probably when he went to Ohio, perhaps unknowingly hidden in a book, even as it was found recently) to his cousins, such as Anna Bear Lehman who is in the direct line of Stauffer descent. David Neff (1791-1866) was the son of Henry & Anna Oberholzer Neff. He would have been about 10 yrs. old when fraktur was made.
Generally good condition, although two folds show some breaking with tangential tears. Other minor tears and one small hole at right center. Some soiling, foxing and minor stains overall. Edges lifting in frame.
Conserved 1998 by Marilyn Kemp Weidner of Phila. Surfaced cleaned and losses repaired. Hinge-mounted on acid free mat and sealed in a package for framing. Mounted in modern black frame by Lancaster Galleries circa 2004.

Hand-made greeting card made of ruled paper folded in half, book-like. The front has a Thanksgiving day greeting from Joseph H. McGlaughlin to Clara (Weinhold, whom he later married on March 30, 1893). Decorative outside border is "ribbon-work", a style of penwork likely developed by McGlaughlin himself.
Greeting is "To Clara. / This is Thanksgiving / Day. / May you live to see / many more. / Your Friend, / Jos. H. McGlaughlin / Conestoga, / Pa. Nov. 28, 1889".
Inscribed in a florid hand in ink is "Leacock, Pa., Nov. 28, 1889. Dear Clara, this motto which is a part of my work on this holiday, I dedicate to thee, that thou mayst remember me. Your Friend. Jos. H. McGLaughlin" and lower is "To Miss Clara Weinhold, Leacock, Pa."
Birth and baptismal certificate, done on cream-colored laid paper, hand lettered in black ink and colored with red, yellow, and blue highlights. Framed with a border, the text block at center has a large swirl design on the left, inner and outer cutwork borders, with floral design. A heart is in each corner. The most notable trademark of Faber's work is the cutwork border that surround the text.
The text records the birth of Augustus Enck on Nov. 11, 1816 and his subsequent baptism on December 25, 1816 in Warwick Township by Reformed Minister Faber (apparently Rev. John Theobald Faber, b. 1771, who served the New Holland Reformed Church 1807-1819). The parents were Johannes Enck and his wife Catharina Schiffler Enck. The witnesses were Johannes Schiffler and his wife Catharina Obiggemeldeter(?) Schiffler. The text concludes with four lines of religious verse.

Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Flanders Smith. Donated to the Heritage Center, but first entrusted to L.C.H.S. for years until museum was well established.
One horizontal crease along the middle and three vertical creases. Four significant stains near the center, two at the top and two at the bottom, almost mirror images. There are several tears in the cut border, and one small fragment is in an envelope in the object file. Top center of border has crude insert of about 6 1/2" in length. Multiple losses of paper due to "strike-through" of iron gall ink.
A condition report and estimate were done by the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Phila. in 1986. Matted and framed by Carlisle conservator Brian Howard in 1996.

Notes
The Earnests note that Faber reportedly was a Moravian who lived for a time in the Moravian community of Lititz. He may have been a schoolmaster there. Also in this collection is a Faber double bookplate done for Henrich Benitsch about 1815 (P01.45.01).
Research: Augustus Enck/Enk was a carpenter in Lititz according to the Lancaster Co. Directory of 1869. Parents buried in the Zion German Reformed Church Cemetery in Brickerville, Clay Twp. Augustus and several siblings were members of the Moravian church and are buried in the church cemetery (Plot: Avenue 3, Left Side, Row 19, Space 14).

Printed fraktur taufschein (B&BC in German) for Michael Ruthisill, born Aug. 17, 1808 and baptized Aug. 30, 1808 by Pastor (Gotthilf Henry Ernestus) Muhlenberg at the Lutheran Church in Manheim Township, Lancaster County. Parents were Philip and Susanna (Schreiner) Ruthisill and the sponsors were Michael and Catharina Ruthisill (grandparents?).
Certificate printed by Lancaster printer Benjamin Grimler in 1803. Penwork & decoration attributed to the "Ruffled Tulip Artist" by the Earnests (9-14-98). See object file for info.
Printed on laid paper, fraktur has a large central heart and two smaller hearts at bottom with verses in German in each. Large heart has main text, with blanks filled in by scrivener/artist in red ink. 1/4-inch-wide yellow border around perimeter. Hand-drawn floral motifs surround the large heart: large tulip-like flowers at top and bottom center, flowering vine at sides and smaller flowers above small hearts and within large heart. Colored in red, green and yellow.
The "Ruffled Tulip Artist" was working circa 1799-1813. He drew distinctive ruffles around large and folky tulips and infilled in German on printed three-heart forms, of which seven are known - all birth & baptismal certificates.

Provenance
Donor reports his wife has Rudisill ancestors. He and his wife received this fraktur with instructions to sell the piece upon their demise in order to pay for funeral expenses. The fraktur was never sold, even now that his own wife has died. See genealogy of Rudisill family in file, given by Lisa Garrett, cousin of donor's wife. Lisa says donor died in 1998.
Condition when received: Entire piece buckled, pasted onto brown Kraft paper. Multiple tears and losses, especially at center of right and left sides; tears and small hole at center. Some foxing, general soiling, and water damage to colors in vining at sides. Color smears and fingerprints, esp. at top and bottom floral device. Small tears and curling at most edges.
At present: Conserved, matted and placed in sealed package by Marilyn Kemp Weidner in 1999 for $1,553. Framed by Lancaster Galleries.

Four other copies of Grimler's printed certificate known, according to Klaus Stopp (The Printed Birth and Baptismal Certificates of the German Americans Vol. III, p. 128). Three of these were filled out for Warwick Twp. residents;the other for a Manheim Twp. resident. This 1803 print preceded Grimler's partnership with brother Henry which opened in 1804. From 1799-1812, when Lancaster was the seat of State government, the two brothers were employed by the Legislature to do the State printing. Benjamin was elected to the Lower House of the Assembly in 1824 and died in 1832.
See Rudisill genealogy in file, given by Lisa Garrett. It states John Michael Rudisill was born 17 Aug 1808 and died 8 Nov 1843. He married Maria Magdalena Kurtz on 17 May 1829, daughter of Conrad Kurtz and his wife Susanna Barbara Erb.

Printed birth & baptismal certificate with infill & decoration by Francis D. Levan, made for the Werts family. Johanes Merts was born 17 Feb 1832 in Cocalico Twp. in Lancaster County and baptized 8 April 1833. He was the son of Jacob and Catharina Schweigart Werts.
Central text is in German with fraktur infill lettering. There is a border surrounding the text. On the top of the page is a cherub flanked by two boxes of text. Flanking the main text are two large angels. Below them on either side of the text are two branches, each with birds. Within the border, but below the main text is an open bible. Below this motif is an emblem with a lute and trumpet superimposed over music. The artist's signature follows, written as, "Francis D. Levane."
Moderate staining overall. Creases, especially at top and left side. Tear at bottom near center. Small loss on left side near top. Small tears and small area of soiling on lower left side. Paper is darkened at lower corners. Framed in archival materials in 2/2000 by Lancaster Galleries.

According to Klaus Stopp, this printed form by Ritter was done c. 1843-44. Stopp uses the number 695 for this variant of the form. Papers for Birth Dayes give Levan's working dates as c. 1826-50.
Silk ribbon printed as a memorial to General Lafayette. Framed.
Ribbon is printed in black ink. There is a strong horizontal line about one inch from the top as well as one inch from the bottom. Centered between these lines are two images with text. At the top is "LAFAYETTE' over an image of Lafayette in profile within a laurel wreath. Underneath his image is the phrase "THE FRIEND AND COMPANION OF WASHINGTON." Below this is a mourning scene of a cloaked woman mourning at a tomb surmounted with an urn, all underneath a willow tree. The inscription reads, "Born 1757, Died at Paris, May, 1834." A final line of text states, "THE NATION MOURNS A HERO GONE."

Was installed in the Slaymaker's home museum. The ribbon was likely acquired and descended through the family because of the fact that according to family tradition, Lafayette stopped at Amos Slaymaker's hostelry, "The Pennsylvania Arms."
A favorite of George Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette fought in the American Revolution, commanding American troops in several battles. In 1824, he returned to the United States for a grand tour where he was greeted with cheers and received many honors. His death ten years later in Paris was marked by a sincere outpouring of grief in the United States as well as in France. This particular mourning scene includes a cloaked woman grieving at a tomb topped with an urn underneath a weeping willow tree.
The urn on top of the tombstone symbolizes death since urns were often used in Greece and Rome to store cremated remains. The weeping willow, so named because of the way raindrops run down its long leaves causing some to think it looks like the tree is crying, serves to reinforce the emotions of grief and mourning.
Overall deterioration, fragile and fraying. Top 1/2 inch of ribbon is nearly separated where hinge is still attached. Overall soiling with damp stains.

Print depicts bird perched on branch of flowering tree. Colored in pink, light red, blue and green. Feet on bird are hand drawn in ink.
Also impressed on paper to left of bird's breast is an image of a closed flower or bud with long stem. At left of head is an impression of two diagonally positioned scallops.
Inscribed on reverse in black ink is: "Clement Bixler/ February the 13th 1843."
Age darkened laid paper. Very minor stains/foxing in incipient stages. Multiple pin holes at top, 3 or 4 at bottom and two at center right. New frame has crackled paint finish.

Clement is the nephew of David Bixler & son of Absalom.
Framed silhouette of gentleman in profile, facing viewer's right. He is perhaps early-to-middle-age years, dressed in high collar and coat. Below is the name "Amos Ellmaker" handwritten in cursive in faded black ink.
Image is cut out of a rectangle of white wove paper, superimposed on a matching piece of black silk and secured with stitches at periphery. There is a window mat of faded marbelized paper, frame is molded walnut.
Same marbelized paper also covers back of frame. Clipping from printed biographical article is pasted to back.
Moderate wear and aging overall. Wove paper is darkened with fold lines and pin holes. Frame is worn with loose joints. Frame backing paper shows wear at corners and was cut to remove artwork, replaced and secured with cellophane tape, now removed except for bottom strip, leaving adhesive residue.

According to the Biographical Annals of Lancaster County, Amos Ellmaker (b. 2-2-1787 and d. 11-28-1851) was a man of intellect and attainment. He was grandson of immigrant Leonard Ellmaker (Germany to Earl Twp in 1726) and son of Nathaniel Ellmaker. He attended Princeton College, then law school in Litchfield, Conn. He began practice in Hbg., served as an officer in the War of 1812, later was appointed prosecuting attorney for Dauphin Co., elected to the State House of Representatives, appointed Presiding Judge for the district composed of Dauphin, Lebanon and Schuylkill counties, was later appointed Attorney General of Pa., but resigned in 1821 to move back to Lancaster. Judge Ellmaker was in 1832 a candidate of the anti-Masonic party for Vice-President of the U.S. In 1816, he had married Mary Rachel Elder of Harrisburg. They had six children.

Watch paper, a small circle of paper, printed with an advertisement, which aided in protecting a watch movement when inserted into a pocket watch.
This hand-trimmed paper disk is printed with an advertisement for a hatter on King Street in Lancaster. Within a foliate border is the text: "Made & Sold by FREDERICK FRICK, King Street nearly opposite the Goal (sic) LANCASTER." Written in black ink, the text is done in cursive and printed lettering. The final "K" in FREDERICK was added later, since it was deleted when originally scrivened. At the top border is a tricorner hat and at the bottom is a beaver, both signs of Frick's trade: a hatter. Written by Wendell Zercher.
