Originally cataloged by KC, 2002-2003. The project was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission’s Archives and Records Management Grant, ME 230340, 2002-2003.
The William J. Buch Papers contains photographs, scrapbook pages, and personal letters to and from William J. Buch, also known as Joe. Several letters and items pertain to his likeness to Franklin D. Roosevelt, including correspondence with the White House and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library. Other items include documents and photographs of his service in World War I, Lancaster County boxers, and his son's World War II service.
Admin/Biographical History
William "Joe" Buch served in World War I. He founded Buch's Pharmacy at the corner of Charlotte and King Streets in Lancaster, Pa. and later ventured into the sporting goods business. Mr. Buch was known as a Franklin D. Roosevelt double and wrote often to offer support to the President. Mr. Buch was very active in the local and state Democratic Party. He posed as Roosevelt's twin at many political events. More information is available in Folder 17.
The World War I Collection contains the contents of a scrapbook assembled by an unknown WWI veteran. Included are military draft cards, photographs of Ambulance Co. No. 111, 28th Division, photographs and programs for dedication of memorial monument to Ambulance Co. No. 111, postcards of France, newspaper clippings, and posters.

Grand Army of the Republic badge. "In Union There Is Strength" on top pin. "D. H. Nissley Post, No. 478 / G. A. R. / Mount Joy, PA." G.A.R. emblem in center of badge. Badge is black with gold letters and gold braided trim on bottom with metal fringes.
Plain fabric banner with outline, in red, of a badge with blue compass and corner rule providing an opening for a right upper arm holding a small sledge hammer. At the base of the banner are blue letters, "Jr. O.U.A.M." for the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, an American fraternal order that began as a youth affiliation of the Order of U.A.M.
(Concord School in the Germantown area of Philadelphia is the birthplace of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics.)

Dirty overall. Heavy liquid stains near bottom edge. Three raw edges: Side edges are ragged with some holes on right edge.
Neck and upper bottle decorated in glass with a fluted collar that ends with a scalloped edge. On the side, enclosed in an oval, "Ideal Milk Products co. Lancaster, PA." On the other side "One pint liquid." On the base "A.B.C. 2 - Registered" On bottom, in big letters "LMP"
Provenance
Donor states that on Jan. 1, 1929, York Sanitary Milk Co., Lancaster Sanitary Milk Co. and Ideal Milk Products Co. combined to form Penn Dairies.
Oval tin box (A) with fitted, domed lid (B). Box has two raised bands on sides. Flat bottom of box is soldered to sides. Lid created by soldering a hammered, rounded oval top onto a 1/2" oval band. Interior of both A and B is tinned.
Used as a container for the miniature tea kettle G.00.03.1.

Ownership by donor's father, William A. Heitshu. Donor believes oval box was original container for teakettle.
Exterior surface has vestiges of an original finish, now oxidized with areas of corrosion. Abrasions over much of surface. Interior moderately rusted and corroded.

Wood storage box for camera supplies with hinged top and is attached with hooks that swivel into i-bolts. In side the box is a thin lateral support that extends 5.5 inches and allows open space below. Box contains a metal bar, camera lens cover, and several small wooden blocks.
"W. S. Gleim/ No 38" is stenciled in black on the back of the container. William Gleim was a photographer and a collection of 47 of his lantern slides are in the archives here at Lancaster History.
Items inside the box include:
1. A 2.5-inch diameter leather-covered lens cap/cover, with black velvet lining;
2. A narrow metal flash tray and
3. 3 wood pieces.
