Description: James Buchanan and Wheatland Scrapbook, February 1936-May 1948. This scrapbook describes the establishment and grand opening of James Buchanan’s Wheatland in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The volume contains newspaper articles that tell Wheatland estate’s history and James Buchanan’s life story. Newspaper articles illustrate the excavation and archaeology performed at the estate before May 1948.

Admin/Biographical History: James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old.

Description: James Buchanan Memorial, 1902-1915. Although James Buchanan is the subject; his Freemasonry is the focus of this scrapbook. The book contains information on the Masonic Home in Elizabethtown and Wheatland in Lancaster. The people mentioned in the scrapbook are H. T. Albert, William Uhler Hensel, and Jacob Hay Brown.

Title: Masonic Order Activities and the Anniversary Celebration of James Buchanan Scrapbook

Description: Masonic Order Activities and the Anniversary Celebration of James Buchanan Scrapbook, No date. This scrapbook contains a considerable amount of information about Freemasons and James Buchanan's involvement as a Freemason. Commemorating James Buchanan's 100th year as a Freemason, the book shows the events surrounding that celebration through newspaper clippings and handwritten notations. An item of special interest is the facsimile of a handwritten letter by James Buchanan from 1816. The volume conveys information about the bicentennial of Templarism in Lancaster County. Bylaws and historic member lists are available for Lancaster and Elizabethtown. Some names mentioned are Marquis de Lafayette, Commodore Thomas MacDonaugh (head of a local Freemason chapter), and Andrew Jackson.

Title: Welsh Family Scrapbook

Description: The Welsh Family Scrapbook contains articles from a variety of newspapers, about a variety of subjects. Most are undated, but appear to date from before 1850 through approximately 1890. Many of the articles pertain to Thomas Welsh and his family, but otherwise no overall theme, pattern or thread is discernible. The articles are pasted in a very loose chronological order, with many exceptions. The underlying book itself is David Carpenter's Execution Docket record from 1822-1823, and many pages have not been pasted over. Note: Contains articles and records related to James Buchanan.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Title: Thomas Welsh Scrapbook

Description: Scrapbook appears to be the work of Thomas' son, Blanton Welsh. The volume was origianlly a record book for the Commonwealth Insurance Company, for which Thomas Welsh was an agent in Columbia. The scrapbook contains newspaper articles from the Columbia Spy, beginning with articles on the cholera epidemic of 1854, Welsh's cases as Justice of the Peace, and published war correspondence by Thomas Welsh under the names "Thirsty Squad" and "45". Blanton continued the scrapbook with newspaper articles about his father and sisters, and a lawsuit against him in 1930; his mother's obituary; his wedding announcement; his visiting cards; a letter from Lillie to Blanton; and letters to Thomas Welsh. Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Title: "Aunt Min sez" radio scripts

Description: More than fifty scripts for the WGAL radio show, "Aunt Min Sez," were saved in this scrapbook. Aunt Min, the homespun character, shared anecdotes about holidays, the weather, church, dieting, learning to ride a bicycle, Atlantic City, a bat in the house, house cleaning, and various other subjects. Her stories combined humor with down-to-earth philosophy about life and provided entertainment for readers and listeners.; Mrs. Marian Root Wisler, of Columbia, Pennsylvania began publishing "Aunt Min Sez" as a newspaper column in November 1938. The fifteen minute radio scripts were written and read by Mrs. Wisler, who was sometimes joined by Mrs. Wilbur Laird portraying "Jen." The show aired Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. on WGAL radio and the scripts were published in The Columbia Broadcaster.

Admin/Biographical History: Marian Root Wisler was married to John Jay Wisler, Sr. who was a 4th cousin of John W. W. Loose. Mrs. Wisler was the publisher of The Columbia Broadcaster from 1931-1934.
