Manuscript book of poetry compiled by Alice Caldwell of Lancaster. Some poems, songs and hymns are copied from other sources, but some may be original. She signed and dated each composition. 1837-1839, 1853.
Insert 1 Three drawings by Alice Caldwell
Two drawings of a vase with intertwined flowers. 28 September 1827.
Branch with two peaches and at the side a smaller bird with a flower in its beak. 28 October 1831.
Insert 2 Eulogy, "On the Death of Robert Scott," composed by Henry Carter. Mr. Scott, a native of Little Britain, Lancaster County, died of Erysipelas Fever in California. No date.

Charcoal drawing of a Union Civil War soldier in uniform (shirt, pants and hat) holding his sword in his right hand with blade flat across his torso pointing up against his left shoulder. A strap on his right shoulder crosses his body to below his waist on the left holding the scabbard. His left arm is akimbo. "U.S." is on his belt buckle.
The drawing is matted in pale pink and is in an ornate gold-painted gesso frame.

Description
Colored drawing of a stag, attributed to David Fry, framed. Small drawing done on wove paper (4/5" x 3.5") of brown stag standing sideways and facing forward. Standing on green grassy area with three flowering plants. Round nostrils and round eyes with pupils. Unsigned. Strips of pasted on paper at top and bottom adhere artwork to pressed paper frame having embossed decoration including scrolling foliate border and anthemion at top. Colorful plaid-printed paper infills flat center sections of frame.
Inscribed in inked script on center of reverse is "Betsy Erhard/1829." The number '23' is pencilled on adhered framing paper. Frey would have been 70 years old when he made this drawing. (By Wendell Zercher)

Paper drawing has holes and losses at right center, adhered paper at edges; general darkening & soil with 6 large moisture and mildew and/or foxing around edges. Long tear at left above center, several punctures in grass area near left side. Drawing detaching from frame & pasted paper. Frame has four horizontal cracks at side members.

Pencil sketch on heavy grey paper, by Lloyd Mifflin. Pencil sketch on both sides, though sketch on back appears to be unfinished.
Front sketch: Haystacks in field in foreground, with trees, hill, and sky in background. Highlights in white pencil of chalk.
Back sketch: Unfinished showing field with roughly drawn haystacks and vegetation, looking down on the Susquehanna River with opposite shoreline shown, with a roughly drawn bridge going across the river.
Written on back of modern frame is: "Bridge at Columbia, c. 1871."

Description
Pencil sketch of man with pole by Lloyd Mifflin. Simple pencil study done on nearly square, buff piece of paper. Subject is a man (hobo?) wearing a coat and hat, walking with a pole over his shoulder with a bag(?) attached. Framed in new oak frame, mounted on dark red paper with no visible hinges or corners. Foam-core backer board states, in pencil, "LLOYD MIFFLIN/ 1842-1921." Ink figures on reverse of frame ($3.25, 4 x 4, P 02). Photo in file.
