The Christiana Resistance, commonly referred to as the "Christiana Riot" occurred in September of 1851 in Christiana, Pennsylvania, a borough in Lancaster County. The events known as the Christiana Resistance include an attack from slaveholders in Maryland on the inhabitants and home of William Parker a free black man living in Christiana, Pennsylvania. The slaveholders crossed the state border, and attempted claim and return the freedom seekers as their property, under the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
The violent confrontation resulted in the death of Edward Gorsuch, a slaveholder, and the escape of William Parker to freedom in Canada. Edward's son, Dickinson Gorsuch, was wounded and taken to the farm of Levi Pownall, where the Pownall family nursed him back to health. Historically, this event challenged the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 and is considered a precursor to the Civil War.

Letter from Harriet Lane to James Buchanan expressing her displeasure with Rockaway which is just as it was the previous summer. She reminds him of the medals she earned at school and asks him to take her to historic Northern towns when Congress adjourns. She says that Mr. Walker is coming but Eskridge is not, remembers the hospitality of Mrs. Dallas in Philadelphia, and asks of the health of Miss Hetty. Signed Harriette. She praises a concert given by pianist [Maurice] Strakosch and Miss Northall and urges him to purchase a piano like it. The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester recounting her recent journey from Philadelphia to Lancaster, chats with Mr. Longenecker and Mr. Slaymaker, an encounter with Major Watson, the return of Lily’s brother from his travels, the many “admirers” of Lily’s aunt, especially Emerson, and asking her to send forgotten items to her by way of James Henry when he calls, in particular her corsets, an earring and her picture.
