Manuscript copy of a rental agreement between Joshua Stevens of Indiana and Fountain Black of Kentucky for Stevens' house on Washington Street in Indianapolis, Indiana. The document includes a description of the house and terms of the agreement. Signatures of Joshua Stevens, Fountain Black, and [B. M. Hatton].

Advertising trade card for The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company
Description
Advertising trade card for The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, the largest importers and retailers in the world, pioneers in the business, and the only importers dealing direct with consumers.
The front of this trade card, with its derogatory and cariactured depiction of race, shows an African American family that stops to read a billboard advertising the business. "Whoa! Stephen till I read dis yer sign."
The reverse contains the address of the home office, locations of stores throughout the United States, and warnings about the "vile mixtures" of competitors.

This portion of the article discusses disappointment that the Stevens bill for enlisting [men of color] did not become law, men of color serving in the U.S. Army, the draft and use of substitutes, political views on the war and people of color migrating to Pennsylvania, and General Burnside. Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.
