Summary: The 1847 publication briefly address climate soil and agriculture in Alta and Baja California in chapter I. The following eight chapters consist of communications from the U.S. Government consisting of instructions in the event Mexico declared war, justification of and motives for war, various reports to Washington, communications with Mexican officials in Alta California, accounts of the military operations in California, the articles of capitulation entered into at Rancho of Cowanga on January 13, 1847, all of which are interspersed with personal observations and comments by the author. The final chapter deals with the question of whether slavery would be allowed in California, the policy of the South and its motive for a slave market and emigrants to California and Northern Mexico [from California State University's Digital Commons]

Buchanan of the Epsicopal church [sic], a brother of the President James Buchanan. Our parents named their first born -- a boy for that minister, Edward Buchanan."; "Aunt Kate was a teacher for some time at Millersville, Pennsylvania Normal School. The school published a magazine entitles [sic] 'The Page Monthly.' Her intimate frind on the faculty was Rose Budd, who wrote an article for the magazine entitled 'Let me die in Autumn.' It was Clara's last school days that she choose [sic] that poem for her recitation. Her wich was granted when she passed away Sept. 1, 1860."

Description: This collection contains the official records of the Sphinx Club in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The minute books date from 1912-1985. Histories of the club were prepared in 1934 and 1962. Dinner programs, membership lists, meeting and speaker schedules, correspondence and speeches make up the bulk of the collection. There are images of some of the earliest members, as well as articles about the statue of the Sphinx.
