Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Provenance: May have been passed down through Emilie Benson Welsh's family who had ties to New York's Hudson Valley, then passed down through the Welsh family--Blanton Charles Welsh to Emilie Benson (Welsh) Wiggin to Nancy Jane (Wiggin) Townsend. Acquired from: Chuck Townsend, Knoxville, Tennessee, 2016/05/15.

Lancaster Journal issue with announcement that James Buchanan has opened his law office
Description
The back page contains an announcement that James Buchanan, after having completed his study of the law under the direction of James Hopkins, has opened his office on East King Street, “two doors above Mr. Duchman’s inn, and nearly opposite to the Farmers Bank.” Lancaster Journal, vol. 19, no. 54, 4 pages, 4 March 1813.
