Jacquard coverlet woven by Jacob Lutz for Benjamin Bausman ("Bengaman Bowsman") in 1846.
This is a coverlet (in great condition) is made up of two fastened panels. Its colors are navy, green, and two shades of red and it has fringe on two of its sides. The design is five horizontal rows of floral medallions alternating with leaves. Bottom edge has a design depicting two types of buildings. Signature/date squares on the bottom two corners.
Coverlet was donated to Berks History Center by Mrs. Arthur G. Lyons in 1947 and accessioned. Deaccessioned in 2020.
Jacob Lutz (1806-1861) appears in 1830 tax records of East Hempfield Township, Lancaster Township. From 1831-1846, his recorded profession is a weaver.
Rev. Benjamin Bausman (1824-1909) was born in Lancaster Twp. He began his formal education at Franklin College in 1846 in preparation for the ministry. He accepted a position in Reading as pastor in 1863. He remained in Reading as a pastor and community leader. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/48622482/benjamin-bausman

Woven coverlets of two 38.5-Inch loom widths seamed in center. Horizontal bands of dark blue, green and 2 shades of red wool that form fringes on both sides. The lengthwise natural cotton forms the fringe at the end of the 1-inch cotton band on the foot edge. The top/head edge is rolled and stitched. Beautifully designed so green bands contain leaves; rose clusters are reds; with blue bands between. Bird and tree designs border sides and foot.
