Black painted canvas knapsack with "F. / 1st. P.V. / J. Conner" stencilled in white on outside. Belonged to John Conner of Co. F, 1st Pennsylvania Volunteers (Three Months), a company which originated in April 1861 from the Lancaster Fencibles.
Canvas with black waterproof finishe on outside. Machine sewn, squared corners with flaps at top sides that can be tied together to cover top opening. On back are four strips under which belts can be slid. Belt like a "Y"--two ends with holes from one strip that has 2 buckles at its end.
33" x 23.25" hemmed piece, centered along one long (33") edge and sewn to top back of case. Two 8.5-inch strips of twill tape sewn 7 inches apart in center of both 23.25" edges so this piece can fold over, completly covering the case and can be secured with ties.
Civil War metal Union military button with metal loop shank soldered to center back. Front shows a left-facing eagle with wings spread, stars-and-stripes shield on chest. Left talon holds arrows; right talon holds olive branch.
Metal Navy military button with 13 stars around edge above long-necked winged bird and left slanted anchor below. On reverse: Scovill Mg. Co. Waterbury around center wire loop/shank.
Rounded gold-colored metal Civil War button with metal loop shank on reverse. Eagle with wings spread grasping arrows in right talons and olive branches in left talons. Shield on breast with an upper case letter 'I' /Roman numeral 1.
Metal pin with G.A.R. flanked by curlyques and beaded border all around. 4 round hemispheres on lower edge. On reverse, two pins with curved wire clasps. Upper pin (some of wire missing) is 1.5 inches wide; lower larger pin measures 2.5 inches wide.

a) U.S. 1862 Bridesburg rifle-musket; .58 caliber with bayonet. Stock of the barrel is stamped "L MIFFLIN" in two places. Used by Columbia, Pa. native Lloyd Mifflin (1846-1921) as a member of the Columbia Home Guard during the Civil War.
