(February) 1717, directed Jacob Taylor, Surveyor General of the Colonies to survey all of the tract of land between the Sus- quehannock and Conestoga creek as far up the river as the land granted to Peter Chartiers, and they by a line running from the said river to Conestoga creek; and to make

northern Maryland and Chester and Lancaster counties, Pennsylvania, known to geologists as the Ser- pentine Barrens. Its springs flow a few yards into a tributary of Carter's Run, which meets the Conowingo Creek about a half mile northwest of the Seven Springs rock. They are about a quarter of a mile west

prior to 1733, accord- ing to Rupp, not less than three mills were built nearby. They were Emanuel Herr's on the Pequea, Buckley's on the Octorora and William Smith's on Beaver Creek. William Smith's mill, or another unrecorded mill, possibly Martin Bear's, was driven by the present dam about 350 yards
