Pair of English Queen Anne brass candlesticks, marked 'A' and 'B'.
Baluster shaft mounted on wide, square base with stepped edging. Circular indentation in top of base. Very low feet at corners. Vertical seams on shaft indicate cast parts. A and B differ slightly in height.
Details very worn. Candlestick 'B' is split at seam on shoulder below cup and split at both sides of candle cup top edge at seams. "A" has small split at lip seam. Both sticks have distortions at various places, especially at base and lip.

Candlestick shaft is fitted with an inner cylinder with attached knob that raises and lowers candle. Thumb screw knob slides via a slot on side of candlestick and screws tight to secure position.

Baluster shaft mounted on wide, square base with gadrooning and stepped edging. Vertical seams on shaft indicate cast parts. Metal pin inside candle cup anchors candle. Metal pin protrudes on underside of 4.625 inch square base.

Candle stand or lamp of tin in an eye shape supporting three vertical cylinders serving as candle holders. For use on a table or stand. Edges of candle stand are turned up at about 45 degrees and crimped. A handle is soldered to one interior side of stand made of a curled strap of tin whose end extends for a thumb support.
Wrought iron fat lamp on stand. Lamp is an open, shaped pan supported by a central high stem apparently comprised of two baluster-turned sections joined at the center. Stem fits into a disk-shaped base and is secured by a nut. Edges of base have a pie-crust decoration. Four penny feet under base are actually terminals of an X-shaped armature attached to bottom with the same nut attached to post end. Each of 4 arms is struck with a 6-pointed star; one arm has a diamond-like motif comprised of 4 semicircles. One arm struck "J HERR" and opposite arm has "J H 1825." Paint decoration is of a later period: black overall except underside which is an earlier green paint. Gold highlights on feet, edge of base, parts of center post and underside of lamp pan.
Made by John Herr (1771-1854) of Eden Twp, later Manor Twp., finally Pequea Twp.
Provenance
Ex-Stratford Lee Morton lighting collection, who was an insurance man from Clayton, Missouri and a founding member of the Rushlight Society. After his death the lamp was sold at Garth's auction in Ohio in either Nov. 1979 or March 1980. Then offered for sale in July by dealer Chris Machmer to the Heritage Center. Morton may possibly have acquired the lamp from Hattie Brunner.
John Herr was a blacksmith first in Eden Twp., then Manor Twp. He is listed as a blacksmith in 1808 Manor Twp. tax records. After a 2nd marriage, he moved in the late 1840s to Pequea Twp. just south of New Danville. See Clarke Hess, Mennonite Arts, pp. 84-85.

Lamp rests on a saucer base with gold painted ring decorating edge of raised center. Finger ring soldered to bottom of cup and center pillar. Reservoir is stenciled with gold lettering: "SAML. DAVIS/ PATENTED/ MAY 6th,1856".
Strong paint losses, esp. on rim of saucer base with resultant rusting. Paint losses also on fuel reservoir sides. Structurally sound. Scattered and rust. Bottom worn.

Tin fluid lamp with weighted base and applied medallion of maker.
Lamp has round pedestal base, cylindrical pillar and bucket-shaped reservoir with a domed top. Reservoir is a lift-out unit which fits into conforming bucket-shaped top. The base of the top section has decorative pierced work.
Metal oval medallion at base of pillar reads: "C.F. REES/PAT.JUNE 12. 66/ MILLERSVILLE/ LANC. Co. PA."
