Summary
The 1847 publication briefly address climate soil and agriculture in Alta and Baja California in chapter I. The following eight chapters consist of communications from the U.S. Government consisting of instructions in the event Mexico declared war, justification of and motives for war, various reports to Washington, communications with Mexican officials in Alta California, accounts of the military operations in California, the articles of capitulation entered into at Rancho of Cowanga on January 13, 1847, all of which are interspersed with personal observations and comments by the author. The final chapter deals with the question of whether slavery would be allowed in California, the policy of the South and its motive for a slave market and emigrants to California and Northern Mexico [from California State University's Digital Commons]
This book follows up on the "The Records of Holy Trinity (Old Swedes) Church, Wilmington Del., from1697 to 1773. Translated from the original Swedish by Horace Burr,with an abstract of the English records from 1773 to 1810" and catalogs all the names that appeared in the original tome and citing various errata. The Catalogue takes the form of separate bride and groom indexes to the 3,600 marriages in the original volume, an index to some 4,000 births/baptisms performed under the auspices of Holy Trinity, a smaller index to burials, and a complete name and subject index to all persons or subjects not found in the vital records. All in all, some 12,500 individuals are listed here.

Summary
"Pennsylvania Jeffersonians were the first American citizens to attempt to translate idealized speculations about democracy into a workable system of politics and governance. In doing so, they revealed key assumptions that united other national citizens regarding democracy and the conditions necessary for its survival. In particular, they assumed that democracy required economic autonomy and a strong measure of economic as well as political equality among citizens. This strong egalitarian theme was, however, challenged by Pennsylvania's precociously capitalistic economy and the nation's dynamic economic development in general, forcing the Jeffersonians to confront the reality that economic and social equality would have to take a back seat to free market forces.".
