Letter from James Buchanan to H. B. Swarr expressing much gratitude for the proceedings of the Lancaster County Convention, hoping in vain that his coming departure from public life would mitigate the “virulence” directed toward him, asking who “young Keenan” is, perhaps Frank Keenan, commenting on the detractors of Senator Douglas, and lamenting that he cannot come home because he has assumed the duties of Mr. Floyd, his former Secretary of War.
