Letter from James Buchanan to Henry E. Johnston noting that he had a pleasant visit to brother Edward’s family and is happy that mother and son are doing well; reporting of seeing Mr. Macalester (a member of the Union League and a “violent” Republican, though he gave a dinner for Mr. Peabody along with John W. Forney in attendance, and happy that even though Macalester voted for Geary that his son voted for Clymer, and a note about Lily and Harriet; repeating the rumor that Harriet Buchanan and Bob Rogers will be married; having not seen the Nevins; begging off from visiting during the winter but hopes to come in warmer weather; asking that Harriet be informed of all the good wishes from her friends; and that Judge Cadwalder gave him a dinner with General Meade in attendance. Forney at the Fulton Opera House during the Hancock campaign in which he referred to Forney leaving the Democratic party and himself leaving the Union, both “only to return later.” Hagerstown, Maryland.

Telegram from the United States Military Telegraph Corps to Thomas Welsh
Description
Printed telegram with heading "United States Military Telegraph." Addressed to Colonel Thomas Welsh. Handwritten text reads: "You were confirmed a Brigadier General this evening." Signed by J. W. Forney. Note: Promotion required the approval of the U.S. Senate. John Weiss Forney was Secretary of the United States Senate, 1861-1868.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.
