Letter of condolence from J. E. Shomier to Major Blanton C. Welsh on the death of his sister Thomas. Letter contains sweet recollections not only of Shomier's respect for Thomas, but also his contacts with other members of the Welsh family through the years.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson expressing surprise and delight at receiving her “extra” letter which he received a day late because the President and his party were still in the country and he is happy that her mother guards her well; reports that talking to her mother was gratifying especially since Mary’s grandmother was feeling better; the president of the Austrian ministry would like to present an autographed letter to the President in person; met her Uncle Peter and his wife this morning; has not seen Dan or the girls but will soon; will move back to the city very soon; his friend Schraff appears to have shaken the blues over a love affair; hopes she will be well enough to visit him soon. Envelope with stamp and postmark addressed to Miss M. H. Nicholson, Care Col. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. Washington, D.C.

The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
