Swarr her attorney to draw up estate papers; admitting that he opened the enclosed letter from Mr. Florey in which he wants to close a loan to her but with conditions; thinking that the influence of Parson Rosenmiller on Dr. Lane would affect adversely the estates of the family; asking that she find out from James Henry whether New York paid interest in gold or “depreciated paper”; finding pleasure in visiting his Chester County farm; and rejoicing at Mrs. Henry’s recovery. Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester recounting her recent journey from Philadelphia to Lancaster, chats with Mr. Longenecker and Mr. Slaymaker, an encounter with Major Watson, the return of Lily’s brother from his travels, the many “admirers” of Lily’s aunt, especially Emerson, and asking her to send forgotten items to her by way of James Henry when he calls, in particular her corsets, an earring and her picture.
