Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson apologizing for not writing on schedule but while they are in the country the regular schedule will not work since the President leaves the While House on Friday for the weekend; he is arranging a Party for a sail on the Harriet Lane that he will have no time to write; he hopes the trip will include Annapolis so that he might bring is best friend Mr. Scharff, who has kept him from becoming too wild, to meet her and implores her to like him; General Ward is joining the group in hopes that Miss Saunders will also be there, but she will not be; mentions her cousin Margie, the Ingrahams, and her aunt; chatted with Miss Emily.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson wondering why her last letter had a sad ring to it; does not want to return to the “hateful climate of Washington”; is happy that her sister Emily is coming to Lake George as part of her wedding trip but is sad he will not be there show her its beauty; the family Thieriot is prepared to love her when they meet her; gives his travel itinerary, stopping in New York to see Mr. Scharff and attend to business, stopping to see Edward Young Buchanan, whose family nursed him back to health when he was sick, and finally arriving in Annapolis for the weekend; tried to paint her a picture of Lake George, but has not painted recently. Envelope from Bolton, NY September 10 with stamp partially removed addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Care Col. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. Bolton, Lake George, NY.

Description
Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson trying to get over a “large dinner”; looking forward to next week when he hopes to bring his yacht to Annapolis for a sail to Baltimore and back if he gets the weekend off and the weather is fine; the President granted a short reprieve to Barret, who should have been hanged today; wonders of Miss Emily’s sore throat is better; hopes she will be able to accompany Miss Ella to Washington so that he and she can see each other every night and would be her first visit to the capital since their engagement; Mr. Magraw came from Baltimore to have dinner with him and hopes Magraw and a ”sparkling young widow” will soon make a match; has received an invitation to General Henderson’s daughter’s wedding, the groom, Mr. du Pont, is a good friend of his.

Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson commenting on the warm weather; the Napiers have been recalled to The Hague; all the young ladies are chasing Lord Lyons, a bachelor; the “gaity’ season has begun, with many dinners; Mr. Scharff’s brother and his bride (they were engaged three years!) are sightseeing; Mrs. Craig asked about her; asks about her “little hospital patients”’ thanks Miss Emily for her postscript to Mary’s last letter. Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson looking for her next letter; hopes she enjoyed her last party; Picolomini is singing, but he is not going to hear her; visited her sister Emily but she was out; the Ingrahams told him that Mary and Miss Margie were coming to town for a few days; list all the parties he hates to attend including Miss Saunders’ ball; General Cass’s dinner; the Douglas’s ball; Mrs. Riggs’ and Mrs. Merricks’ ball; and a reception at the President’s; still has a cold; infers she is the reason for his appreciating life more; Dr. Dan is flitting about on the social circuit; hopes Dr. Dan will find a “sweet little aunt” at Belvidere; the Scharffs are enjoying married life; Bob Magraw returned to Baltimore; the Cobbs and others on the Rev. Cutter’s expeditions dropped in on the Scharffs; and James Buchanan Henry will take to Scharffs to a reception and a large State dinner. Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson apologizing for the short note; his cold is still with him; visited her sister Emily and she might go to the Douglas’s Party; will be at a large dinner tonight and hope to talk to the Scharffs since his office and his wife keep him busy; hopes to open an office in Newark and will stay with the Scharffs in New York; eagerly awaits her Philadelphia letter; the Scharffs attending the Douglas and the Senator Seward Parties; and says he tries to not be too envious at their happiness. Envelope with postmark and removed stamp addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, care John L. McKim, Esq, Baltimore. Washington, D.C.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson expressing his elation that the wedding is almost here and he can call her “wife”; is concerned with the wedding details such as his garment and the invitations; hopes that she will vanquish “our enemy,” her illness soon; wrote the President a “very dutiful but strong” letter but has not heard his reply; his business is improving; had a very cold July 4; approves her keeping Miss Emily out of “the plot” and disapproves of a priest acting “in that way.” Envelope with postmark and stamp addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. 142 Broadway, [New York], NY.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson exited that the time is near and much for both to do; he is completing negotiations for their house; he can hardly wait; will arrive in Annapolis on Friday so as to stay out of the way; very sorry that “the girls’ find fault with Mr. Magraw, but he is a good friend of James Buchanan Henry and will be at the wedding; hopes they will not slight him; thinks she will like the house; Mr. Cope will be the first groomsman and is pleased that Miss Emily will stand with Mr. Magraw; not too upset by Dr. Gleichen’s behavior; asks her to send invitations to Dr. and Mrs. Yates, John Yates, Esq, Charles Yates, and Mr. and Mrs. Dunham, all of Meadville, Crawford County, Pa., his cousins. Henry to Louisa Anderson agreeing with her that they should be separated less often but circumstances might decide otherwise; Mr. Parker hasn’t written about his business trip but should when he reaches his home in Guelph, Canada; if he feels well he will embark on a two- to three-week vacation to Lake George, visiting Uncle Edward on the way; he will bring some of his goods to Staten Island to be shipped to Australia; asks about Henny Thieriot; likes matrimony; wonders if Mrs. Muney or Mrs. Meade will be at Lake George; implores her to exert her authority on Dody in a way to gain his everlasting respect; went to a party on a cool piazza and a moonlight row on the bay; mentions Mrs. Southgate and Mrs. Magruder.
