Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane rejoicing that she and Mrs. Roosevelt weathered a storm and arrived safely in New York; saying that Judge Black was supposed to come but might not emphasizing he was “mighty uncertain,” having invited Miss Slaymaker, Miss Old and Miss Grace to dine tomorrow; and announcing that Miss Blanche and the younger Miss Johnston invited him and Miss Hetty to a knitting party, which he will not attend. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore.
