Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane rejoicing that she and Mrs. Roosevelt weathered a storm and arrived safely in New York; saying that Judge Black was supposed to come but might not emphasizing he was “mighty uncertain,” having invited Miss Slaymaker, Miss Old and Miss Grace to dine tomorrow; and announcing that Miss Blanche and the younger Miss Johnston invited him and Miss Hetty to a knitting party, which he will not attend. With envelope addressed to Harriet in care of Judge Roosevelt in New York. Wheatland.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston chastising her for her “slight despondency” and offering advice to avoid it; saying that Judge Black and Mr. Shunk arrived late and sure Mr. Shunk can handle the work; expressing sorrow that business forced him to cut short his visit to her (accompanied by Becky) and forego the one to Philadelphia; noting that he has seen only Wilberforce of the Nevin family; hoping that no one including Wilberforce will vote for Geary but for his choice, Clymer; noting his visit to her sister seemed to produce an improvement in her feelings for him and happy that the boys will be sent to New Hampshire; expressing joy that she has the silk handkerchiefs and stockings; quoting from a letter from Laura Pleasonton that Mrs. Ellis was in New York “fat & well". With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Annotation on envelope: “Oct 2/66 Just before Bby was born & before dear Uncle’s visit to us. Judge Black and dear Uncle’s life.” Wheatland.

Carter to sign a release; is generally satisfied with the trustee’s account of Harriet Lane Johnston’s trust but questions some small charges; says that Mrs. Johnston is upset that the papers of James Buchanan are in the hands of Mr. E. Y. Buchanan, especially after his handling of other items including the picture of the Prince of Wales; wants the papers, valued at $50,000 by Judge Black, transferred to the Safe Deposit Company. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson wondering why her last letter had a sad ring to it; does not want to return to the “hateful climate of Washington”; is happy that her sister Emily is coming to Lake George as part of her wedding trip but is sad he will not be there show her its beauty; the family Thieriot is prepared to love her when they meet her; gives his travel itinerary, stopping in New York to see Mr. Scharff and attend to business, stopping to see Edward Young Buchanan, whose family nursed him back to health when he was sick, and finally arriving in Annapolis for the weekend; tried to paint her a picture of Lake George, but has not painted recently.
